Power Progression

The Sharingan advances through distinct ocular forms. The table follows documented awakenings and evolutions rather than implying that every bearer reached every stage.

Appearance

An activated Three-Tomoe Sharingan has crimson pupils marked by three tomoe. Shinji’s Mangekyō instead displays three ink-black circles arranged in a triangular pattern; when he deactivates it, his eyes return to black 1.

• Three-Tomoe form: Red eyes with three tomoe 1.
• Mangekyō form: A distinct pattern replaces the tomoe; Shinji’s pattern consists of three ink-black circles 1.
• Deactivation: Shinji’s crimson eyes return to their usual black 1 6.

Abilities & Skills

Perception and combat reading

• Sasuke’s improved Sharingan lets him read and counter movements, though Kimimaro’s abilities still overwhelm him 108.
• Sasuke and Hikari use their Sharingan to track and anticipate each other’s movements in a high-speed taijutsu exchange 1478.
• The Sharingan can copy ninjutsu and taijutsu, although the Red Dragon Eye is described as capable of copying some techniques the Sharingan cannot 286.

Genjutsu

• Shinji uses his Mangekyō Sharingan to implant the suggestion “You never saw me” in Shion’s mind after she witnesses his Susanoo 6.
• Itachi traps Sasuke in a Mangekyō genjutsu that forces him to relive the Uchiha massacre 150.

Mangekyō techniques

Mangekyō abilities differ between eyes and owners. Shinji describes the Sharingan’s awakening and abilities as manifestations of its original owner’s spirit 154.

• Shinji’s Susanoo Lamp: Adds sockets to his Susanoo for wielding other eyes. Its use initially requires him to activate Susanoo first 6.
• Fugaku’s Amaterasu and Izanagi: The two techniques contained in Fugaku Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan 875.
• Obito’s Kamui: A space-time technique Shinji values despite the eye providing little ocular-power amplification through Susanoo Lamp 1301.
• Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami: Shinji gains access to it by controlling one of Shisui’s Mangekyō eyes with Susanoo Lamp 1085.

Limitations

• Finite Mangekyō power: Shinji describes Mangekyō pupil power as high-quality Yin Release chakra whose initial reserve cannot be replenished through ordinary rest. Heavy Susanoo use causes eye pain and threatens to ruin his eyes 6.
• Deteriorating sight: Tsunade finds that Sasuke’s Mangekyō vision has worsened; its dōjutsu power has not recovered despite his avoiding its use 751.
• Transplant compatibility: Shinji says the original owner can, in theory, draw out an eye’s full power, while Karin notices stiffness when controlling transplanted Mangekyō eyes 154.
• Fusion requirements: Shinji considers bloodline relation—and similarity between the eyes’ chakra natures—important to the success of Mangekyō fusion 875.
