Background / History

Yakumo was born with a congenital frailty severe enough that Tsunade advised her to withdraw from the Ninja Academy. Refusing to abandon her ambition of becoming a ninja, Yakumo demanded that her parents acknowledge her efforts; the emotional collapse triggered the awakening of Ido, a hostile spiritual entity within her. Ido immediately trapped Kurama Murakumo and Kurama Ryō in Genjutsu and attempted to kill them with illusory fire. 243

Shinji recognized Yakumo's potential and loyalty after intervening in the incident. He selected her as a prospective Servant, marked her Spirit Body with Naobi, equipped her with an Akatsuki Red Cloud outfit and mask, and sealed her parents' memories of the encounter. Yakumo accepted the danger of working with him because she did not want the Kurama Clan implicated in Akatsuki affairs. 246

Shinji later transplanted the Red Dragon Eye into Yakumo. Although its pupil power surpassed that of an ordinary Mangekyo Sharingan and severely strained her body, the transplant gave her exceptional perception and the means to stabilize Ido beyond her mindscape. 275 276

Tsunade subsequently performed a First Hokage cell transplant on Yakumo.
