History

Akatsuki first emerged as an organization founded by Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato in the Rain Country. An operation instigated by Danzō and carried out through Hanzō of Amegakure was believed to have annihilated it, though survivors escaped and remained hidden. 105 705

The organization resurfaced as a clandestine force that recruited powerful rogue ninja. Its early known members included Itachi Uchiha, Jūzō Biwa, Sasori, Deidara, and Kakuzu; its activities included disappearances, infiltration, and the recruitment or coercion of new operatives such as Haku. 40 131

Akatsuki's size, membership, headquarters, and purpose initially remained unknown even to the Five Great Shinobi Villages. Members commonly operated in two- or three-person cells, wore black cloaks with red clouds, and proved difficult to capture. 152
