Curriculum and Grounds
- Children from Konoha's clans can apply to enroll. Teachers guide students, who learn and compete with their peers 870.
- Early lessons cover wilderness survival, tracking footprints, medicinal herbs, and the principles of extracting chakra. Practical ninjutsu and genjutsu are not yet part of the curriculum at that point 3.
- Taijutsu sparring and ninja-tool throwing provide practical training. The grounds include a main training area, smaller areas beyond a grove, and a teaching building 3 870.
- The academy later begins formal ninjutsu instruction with hand seals 387.

- Shinji wins the later assessment and is appointed Chief. During wartime, the Chief can command academy students when not assigned a special mission; the position also carries village treatment equivalent to a jōnin's 653.
- Academy students generally become genin upon graduation and receive a Konoha forehead protector 619.
- When the Chūnin Exams are moved forward, academy students are permitted to register. A written stage of those exams is held at the academy 758 796.
History and Village Role
The academy was established by the Hokage's line to introduce civilian ninja and reduce the dominance of powerful clans 111. Its students include Shinji Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, Karin, Haku, Neji Hyūga, and, later, Kurama Yakumo and Kimimaro 3 72 331.
As unusually strong students emerge, academy assessments become matters of village policy. Konoha's leaders and prominent clans back different candidates for the next generation, while visiting villages use a combat test to judge Konoha's strength 345 355 620. Following that test, Kakashi proposes that jōnin take outstanding students as disciples 361.
The academy also comes under scrutiny during investigations into Akatsuki infiltration: ANBU screen its students, and six—including Shinji, Sasuke, Karin, and Haku—remain under surveillance at one point 254 260. Security is later especially tight around the school because Naruto and Yakumo attend; ANBU patrol it around the clock, including sensory ninja 378. During a subsequent mobilization, Konoha uses the academy's spacious grounds as an assembly point 1274.
