Background / History
Luxray, Ceruledge, and Mimikyu encountered Moltres while searching the Paldean wilderness for a powerful Pokémon with the Flame Body ability to help hatch a mysterious Pokémon Egg. They brought the scorched legendary bird back to Luo Mu's farm, where Luxray and Serperior threw it into the unfinished lake area in anticipation of a battle 28 29.
Angered by its treatment, Moltres fought Dragonite over the wasteland. Dragonite countered its hot winds with Hurricane, summoned rain with Rain Dance, then struck it with Thunder and finished the battle using Dragon Pulse. Luo Mu judged Moltres to be young, inexperienced, and lacking worldly knowledge despite its considerable resilience and rapid recovery 30.
Luo Mu treated Moltres's injuries rather than capturing it. Moltres was confused by this choice, but Luo Mu stated that its current strength did not make him eager to capture it 30. It subsequently remained at the farm, where its Flame Body accelerated the Egg's nutrient absorption and hatching process 32 37.
During the hatching, Moltres guarded the Egg beside Luo Mu and gradually developed sincere concern for the fragile Pokémon inside. The Egg hatched into a Hisuian Growlithe, which immediately called Moltres “Mom”; Moltres eventually became deeply attached to the newborn and watched over it constantly 37 38 45.
Appearance
Moltres is a large bird Pokémon whose head, wings, and tail feathers burn with orange-red flames. Its feathers can become scorched black after severe battle damage 28 30.
- Large avian body associated with the Kanto region 29
- Orange-red flames burn from its head, wings, and tail 28
- Crimson eyes 30
- Can suppress its flames enough to enter Luo Mu's wooden house safely 37
Personality
Moltres initially possesses the pride and temper expected of a legendary Pokémon. It is humiliated by being handled and restrained by Luo Mu's group, yet suppresses its anger when faced with Luxray's watchful presence 32.
Its battle conduct reveals immaturity rather than cowardice. Moltres stubbornly continues fighting while badly injured, finds a way through Dragonite's wind-and-rain domain at the cost of further wounds, and refuses to collapse until Dragonite's final Dragon Pulse 30.
Life on the farm softens it considerably. Though initially bewildered by the Egg and resistant to being treated as a source of warmth, it comes to care for the hatchling and becomes protective of Growlithe 37 38 45.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Body
Moltres's body maintains a powerful heat that can accelerate the development of Pokémon Eggs.
- Its warmth helped the Egg absorb nutrient solution far faster than normal, fully draining one bottle in four days 32
- Luo Mu relied on its Flame Body to help speed the Egg's hatching 32
- It can regulate its flames so they do not ignite nearby surroundings 37
Fire Control
Moltres can generate and precisely restrain intense orange-red flames.
- Its presence rapidly raises the surrounding temperature 28
- Its Sky Fire ignited weeds across the wasteland during its battle with Dragonite 30
- It can launch controlled flames to light a fireplace without setting Luo Mu's house ablaze 37
- It used hot wind and Flamethrower against Dragonite, though both were neutralized by Dragonite's Hurricane 30
Flight and Aerial Combat
Moltres is an airborne combatant capable of creating Hurricane-like winds and breaking through aerial suppression.
- It attempted to counter Dragonite's Hurricane with a Hurricane of its own 30
- It broke through Dragonite's wind domain by cloaking itself in sky-blue Flying-type energy, though it sustained deep wounds in the process 30
- Even after being heavily damaged by Thunder, it remained airborne briefly through sheer endurance 30
Legendary Vitality
Moltres possesses exceptional stamina and recovery.
- Its wounds began healing at an extremely rapid rate during its battle with Dragonite 30
- It endured Dragonite's Rain Dance, Hurricane, and sustained Thunder bombardment before finally being defeated 30
