Jiang Liu had only wanted to show off in front of his good buddy, but the system wouldn't let him.
One system notification was all it took for him to realize he'd become famous in the city.
His peaceful life was about to fade away, and life in the spotlight was about to begin.
Traffic, scandals, fans, sponsorships, sleeping with fans...
"Do I need to start building a public persona and practicing my autograph, too?"
Jiang Liu muttered to himself, then decided he was getting ahead of himself.
It was just a game event. So what if he was the Parkour King? There were 108 of them across the whole region. A little burst of fame like this would die down in a couple of days.
The system announcement had only been heard by the few hundred players on this track. It probably wouldn't even spread.
Unless he could keep appearing in front of players across the whole region in Cultivation Era, who'd bother paying attention to some stranger?
Well, better get back to cultivating.
Jiang Liu's attention soon shifted from the system announcement to the cultivation spots. At a hundred times the usual speed, even just a few minutes would be enough to push him into Qi Refining Layer 9!
He'd been stuck at this level for days. He was finally about to break through!
Jiang Liu found a corner and sat down. Eagerly circulating the Three Revolutions Mysterious Technique, he opened the Character Panel and watched his Cultivation Points shoot up, his spirits soaring.
At this speed, all that reckless sprinting through traps to the finish line had been worth it. He'd lost a third of his health bar, but wasn't this exactly what he'd done it for? These few minutes!
A minute and a half after Jiang Liu started cultivating at the spot, the second-place player reached the finish line.
She was a petite girl with delicate features and fair skin, dressed in a shimmering green gown. Riding a bicycle woven from green vines, she drifted into the finish area and skidded to a stop.
When she saw Jiang Liu was the only one there, confusion flashed in her clear, sparkling eyes. She murmured, "Where's Edward? That doesn't make sense."
She knew she couldn't possibly be faster than Edward, but she'd already arrived. How had he not made it yet?
Could he have been eliminated along the way?
Haha!
Jiang Liu heard the commotion and knew second place had arrived. Curiously, he opened his eyes. When he saw her and the green-vine bicycle she was riding, his eyelid twitched.
Yiluoluo, the specially admitted student from First Middle School, was in second place?
Damn, she even had a vehicle. That was cheating!
He grumbled inwardly, then marveled at how powerful the city's top school, First Middle School, really was. If he hadn't been there, the school would've taken both first and second place. His second uncle would've been green with rage.
As more players arrived, they streamed into the finish area one after another.
The player in third place was a burly middle-aged man in a magnificent golden robe, radiating the air of a domineering ruler.
After reaching the finish area, he didn't immediately start cultivating. Instead, he strode over to Jiang Liu, clapped him heavily on the shoulder, and laughed. "Good nephew, congratulations on becoming the Parkour King!"
Jiang Liu: "?????"
Who the hell was this guy?
Jiang Liu looked up at him, utterly bewildered. "Uncle, who are you?"
"Li Nankun!"
Li Nankun boomed, "Li Dongze is my son!"
At that, Jiang Liu sprang to his feet, clasped his hands, and bowed politely. "Hello, Uncle Li."
When he'd gotten into a conflict with Boss Wang, Uncle Li had been the one to put in a good word for him. Jiang Liu was truly grateful.
If Uncle Li hadn't called Boss Wang, who knew how much more trouble would've come of it?
"Sit, sit. Don't waste time."
Li Nankun pressed Jiang Liu back down and sat beside him. His admiration was plain as he smiled. "Zeze told me before that his good friend was a super genius. I finally get to meet you today."
"The Parkour King—you're seriously impressive!"
He was worth tens of billions and had spent lavishly buying up Spirit Stones through every channel on the day the region opened. His cultivation and magical artifacts were both among the best in the region. He'd thought he would be the Parkour King on this track, but who could've guessed he'd only come in third?
Young people these days were more impressive than the last.
"I just got lucky, Uncle Li."
Jiang Liu was on his best behavior, lavishing praise on him. "You're no slouch either, Uncle Li. Still going strong, and you took third place through sheer skill. You'll surely ascend one day!"
"Hahahaha, that's a long way off." Li Nankun waved his hand, then asked with concern, "About that previous matter—Wang Hui hasn't given you any more trouble, has he? Should I go pay him a visit myself?"
At first, he'd only been helping his son's friend deal with a minor hassle. Since the kid was one of the people who hung around with his son, he couldn't let him get pushed around.
But now, after hearing that Jiang Liu had become the Parkour King, everything had changed.
A lackey?
This was his son's big brother!
The younger generation's relationships needed tending. If his son couldn't manage it, then his dad would step in!
"No need, no need."
Jiang Liu shook his head repeatedly and smiled casually. "He wouldn't dare bother me now."
He'd come after me for another round, only to get himself eliminated!
Would he dare try again?
Then Jiang Liu would have to show him what the Parkour King was really worth.
"Fair enough."
Li Nankun paused. A player of Wang Hui's caliber really might not be much of a match for this young man.
As time passed, more and more players rushed into the finish area. Many of the top finishers knew Li Nankun, the city's business tycoon. When they saw him chatting with a young man, they were astonished.
Who was that student?
"That's Jiang Liu, the guy who came in first, right?"
"He knows Li Nankun from Dize Group?"
"Could he be a genius being promoted by Dize Group?"
"No wonder he was able to take first place. He's with Dize Group!"
"Lucky guy. With Dize Group's financial backing, he definitely won't be a flash in the pan."
The talk in the finish area reached Jiang Liu's ears. He and Li Nankun exchanged a glance and tacitly chose not to correct anyone.
For Jiang Liu, letting outsiders think he had Dize Group backing him would save him a lot of trouble.
For Li Nankun, having a genius associated with Dize Group would raise the group's profile, making it easier to attract talent when they established a sect under the group in the future.
They each got what they wanted. Everyone was happy.
[The first Parkour King event has officially ended. Please look forward to the exciting events to come.]
The system announcement sounded again. As the event ended, Jiang Liu glanced around the finish area. There were only about fifty players.
They hadn't even filled all the top hundred reward slots. This batch of players was hopeless!
Where was Su Weiyang?
Hmm? Had she turned into a giant fireball again?
What about Li Dongze?
Brother Ze hadn't even made it to the finish line?
Rigged!
How many more Cultivation Points did I need to break through to Qi Refining Layer 9?
Ten thousand. Damn Edward, he'd wasted my time. Just let me see you again!
