Background

Seven and his elder sister, Uchiha Qiu, were orphaned, impoverished, and ostracized by the Uchiha Clan. Their home was placed on the outer edge of the clan grounds; Seven was deaf-mute at the time, while Qiu was believed to be blind. He sometimes hunted chickens and rabbits in the back mountain to supplement their food and learned to cook them. 145 149

Uchiha Cimu and two followers repeatedly bullied Seven because of his disability. Shisui once intervened when Cimu stomped on Seven's head, an act Seven later remembered when swearing revenge for Shisui. 150 153

Chen Yiban accepted Seven as a disciple and restored his ability to speak. Seven immediately pleaded with him to cure Qiu's eyesight as well, offering to do anything asked of him. After Chen Yiban exposed Qiu's concealed Mangekyo Sharingan and took her as a disciple, Seven's reverence for his teacher deepened. 146 148

Chen Yiban offered Seven the direct power of the legendary Uchiha Madara rather than a Chakra Fruit, warning that this choice carried both benefits and drawbacks.
