Background

Hongyun began as a red cloud whose spiritual intelligence had only just stirred. Zhenyuanzi recognized his future identity, nourished him through countless ages, told him stories, and activated Longevity Mountain's innate formation to protect him during his transformation. 2

His true body is ethereal and mutable, able to gather and disperse without constancy. His innate origin carried Wind and Fire, while Water arose naturally from the nature of clouds; long residence beside Zhenyuanzi's Innate Earthen Energy eventually integrated Earth as well. This made him a rare bearer of the complete Four Symbols—Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. 19

Zhenyuanzi gave him the Four Symbols Plantain Tree after their Qi resonated. Hongyun chose to cultivate alongside the tree rather than forcefully refine it, then used its Dao rhyme to enter enlightenment and advance. Lord Wanshouyuan later bestowed the complete mysteries of the Xiantian Four Symbols Great Array upon him. 20 21

Although the breadth of his four attributes initially left his Dao path unfocused, Zhenyuanzi advised him to bring all Four Symbols back to a Chaos foundation. Hongyun consequently chose the path of Four Symbols Return to Origin. 76

His cultivation was refined through Zhenyuanzi's Earth Reincarnation Ferry, which allowed him to experience the principles of Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire firsthand. Further opportunities at the Immortal Volcano's Nirvana Fire Pool and the Dragon Palace's Deep Sea Eye completed his Fire Dao and perfected his Four Symbols Dao. 81 97 103

Hongyun deliberately suppressed his Origin-realm breakthrough within the Dragon Palace, judging another's territory unsafe for such a vulnerable moment. After returning to Longevity Mountain, he broke through beneath the Four Symbols Plantain Tree while Zhenyuanzi concealed the phenomenon with the Book of the Earth and the Innate Xutu Great Formation. 103 104 105

He later discovered and inherited Fire Cloud Cave, a cave heaven whose Fire Cloud and Profound Yellow origins resonated perfectly with him. He refined its core, gained access to part of its power, and eventually established a complete connection with the movable cave heaven. 119 123 126 156

Hongyun usually appears as a Daoist in a crimson, cloud-patterned robe. His presence combines rosy cloud light with the Four Symbols' Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire origins. 27 133

Hongyun is naturally carefree, lively, forthright, and deeply loyal to those he considers friends. He is quick to express gratitude, treats Qingfeng and Mingyue playfully, and celebrates the advancement of his companions without reserve. 87 156

He was once inclined toward uncomplicated goodwill and reluctance to fight. Zhenyuanzi's counsel and their shared experiences taught him that kindness without caution can become a weakness. By the time Daoist Qiankun threatened Longevity Mountain, Hongyun retained his warmth but had gained restraint, strategic awareness, and the resolve to eliminate a genuine danger. 103 134

His trust in Zhenyuanzi is absolute. He accepted reincarnation guidance without resistance, protected Wuzhuang Temple during seclusion, joined the campaign against Qiankun, and later lent his Hong Meng Purple Qi without hesitation. 71 81 134 278
