Background
Houtu was born as one of the Twelve Ancestor Witches and inherited an innate affinity for earth, bearing, and nurturing from Pangu's bloodline. Unlike most of her siblings, she did not wholly reject the Primordial Spirit path. Hongjun's first Zixiao Palace sermon stirred her perception of the Great Earth and drew her attention to Zhenyuanzi's systematic Earth Dao. 220
At the second sermon, she explained to the other Ancestor Witches that Zhenyuanzi's Dao Rhyme resembled the Great Earth's origin as she understood it, but was deeper and more complete. With her siblings' support, she traveled to Zixiao Palace to seek communication with him. 222
After the sermon, Houtu humbly asked Zhenyuanzi to guide her in the Way of the Great Earth. In the isolated Quiet Room at Wuzhuang Temple, his teachings on the complete earth cycle and reincarnation redirected her cultivation from the Law of Earth toward the Law of Reincarnation. 225 226
Appearance
Houtu is described as an elegant woman with a calm, compassionate bearing and a profound earthly aura even amid the chaos surrounding Zixiao Palace. 225
- Wears a plain yellow palace dress during her later residence in the Netherworld. 371 374
- Her aura changes from the wild majesty of an Earth Ancestor Witch into a restrained, profound Dao Rhyme carrying the order of beginning and ending. 227
- Her later Saintly presence embodies tranquility, inclusivity, justice, and ancient majesty. 372
Personality
Houtu is notably open-minded for an Ancestor Witch. While her siblings initially dismissed Hongjun's sermons as incompatible with the Witch Clan's body-tempering path, she pursued the questions raised by her own bloodline perception rather than accepting sectarian prejudice. 220 222
She is humble in seeking knowledge and respectful toward those she regards as senior or more experienced. Despite becoming a Saint, she later visits Zhenyuanzi, Hongyun, and Yin Yang to seek help for her siblings' Primordial Spirit cultivation bottleneck. 225 377
Her defining trait is compassion. She recognizes the suffering of lost souls without a destination and initially resolves to sacrifice herself to establish Reincarnation. Zhenyuanzi's plan allows her to fulfill that responsibility without losing herself. 258 259 262
Over time, her stewardship of Reincarnation tempers the fierceness associated with her early Ancestor Witch nature. She becomes patient, analytical, and willing to restrain the Witch Clan from impulsive retaliation while they strengthen their new Primordial Spirits. 371 375
Abilities & Skills
Law of Reincarnation
Houtu's Law of Earth evolves into the higher Law of Reincarnation after receiving Zhenyuanzi's guidance. Her interpretation emphasizes carrying souls and guiding them to their destination. 226 227
- Holds partial authority over the core of Reincarnation. 267 273
- Assists in refining Reincarnation Order, coordinating Yin and Yang, and maintaining the Six Paths' flow. 273
- Her Reincarnation Dao Rhyme benefits members of her tribe; some elders display a faint Reincarnation aura before the Underworld is established. 256 257
- Her enlightenment brings peace, purification, and harmony to souls passing through the Netherworld. 371
- The Six Paths Reincarnation Disk strongly resonates with her Law and nearly pulls her into Daoization; without intervention, merging directly with it could have caused her to lose herself within the cycle. 262
Vital Blood as the Reincarnation Catalyst
Houtu's Pangu-descended Vital Blood serves as the trigger for the alternative method used to establish Reincarnation without sacrificing her body and soul. 259 262
- She expels three drops of Vital Blood to guide the fusion of Lord Wanshouyuan's body, the Six Paths Reincarnation Disk, and Reincarnation Dao Rhyme. 262
- The process severely weakens her aura and leaves her temporarily pale and depleted. 262
- Her bloodline, Law, and compassionate heart are recognized as indispensable to Reincarnation's establishment. 267
Primordial Spirit and Saintly Dao
Houtu becomes the first Ancestor Witch to birth a Primordial Spirit, breaking the Witch Clan's former limitation. 266
- Her Primordial Spirit grows through Netherworld Earth Vein Essence and purified soul power from reincarnation. 371
- Her complete enlightenment of Reincarnation triggers Pangu's legacy, elevating her to Primordial Chaos Saint. 372
- Pangu's legacy also awakens the dormant Soul Origins of the other eleven Ancestor Witches and grants them the Nine Revolutions Profound Origin Technique. 372
- Her attainment stabilizes the Netherworld and the Great Earth. 372 473
Command of the Pangu True Body
During the Witch–Demon conflict, Houtu commands the Pangu True Body formed by the Twelve Ancestor Witches. 424
- Solidifies the Pangu Axe Phantom to break the deadlock against the Great Formation of the Stars of the Heavens. 424
- The axe's resonance disrupts the Pangu Banner, Taiji Diagram, and Chaos Bell, creating a weakness in the opposing formation. 424
- Uses the opening to cleave the stellar formation and push it toward collapse. 424
Relationships
- Zhenyuanzi — Mentor and principal guide in her understanding of the Earth Dao and Reincarnation; devises the method that preserves her from self-sacrifice. 225 259 262
- Lord Wanshouyuan — Co-founder and authority of the Netherworld; appoints her Reincarnation Ancestor Witch and later enfeoffs her as Lady Pingxin. 267 268 273
- The Eleven Ancestor Witches — Her elder brothers and sister; they support her pursuit of the Earth Dao, fear her possible sacrifice, and later rely on her guidance in cultivating Primordial Spirits. 222 259 376
- Di Jiang — Elder brother who initially questions her role in establishing the Earth Dao but prioritizes her safety over the Witch Clan's share of Merit. 258 260
- Hongyun — Senior ally of Zhenyuanzi who witnesses Houtu's transformation, expresses concern during the Vital Blood ritual, and later joins in guiding the Ancestor Witches. 227 262 377
- Yin Yang — Senior Saint whose Dao of opposites is sought as part of the solution to the Ancestor Witches' imbalance between body and Primordial Spirit. 377
- Witch Clan — Houtu's Reincarnation Dao influences a distinct earth-and-reincarnation-focused tribe, and her later sainthood opens a new cultivation path for the entire clan. 256 372
Story Role / Major Arcs
Seeking the Earth Dao
Houtu becomes interested in Zhenyuanzi after sensing that his Earth Dao shares the bearing and nurturing qualities of her Pangu bloodline. She attends Zixiao Palace primarily to observe him and eventually requests his guidance at Wuzhuang Temple. 220 222 225
Becoming the Reincarnation Ancestor Witch
Zhenyuanzi teaches Houtu the meaning of reincarnation, allowing her Earth Law to transform into the Law of Reincarnation and advancing her to Golden Immortal of the Origin. Though she initially believes she must become Reincarnation through self-sacrifice, Zhenyuanzi reveals an alternative centered on Lord Wanshouyuan, the Six Paths Reincarnation Disk, and her Vital Blood. 226 258 259
Houtu resists the Reincarnation Disk's attempt to draw her into permanent fusion, then willingly provides three drops of Vital Blood for the revised ritual. Reincarnation is established without destroying her body or soul; she receives Great Dao Merit, gives birth to a Primordial Spirit, and becomes the Reincarnation Ancestor Witch. 262 266 267
Establishing the Netherworld
As the Netherworld takes shape, Lord Wanshouyuan assigns Houtu to manage the immense influx of lost souls. He subsequently formalizes her status as Lady Pingxin, granting her authority to assist in refining Reincarnation Order and coordinate Yin and Yang. 268 273
Saint of Reincarnation
After long cultivation in the Reincarnation core, Houtu's observation of countless souls and her resonance with the Reincarnation Tree lead to complete enlightenment. Pangu's final legacy responds to her attainment, raising her to Primordial Chaos Saint and granting the other Ancestor Witches the foundation for Primordial Spirit cultivation. 371 372
Guide of the Witch Clan
Houtu urges the Witch Clan to focus on internal transformation rather than immediately retaliating against the Yao Race. When the other Ancestor Witches reach a Primordial Spirit bottleneck, she recognizes the limits of her own experience and seeks instruction from Zhenyuanzi, Hongyun, and Yin Yang on their behalf. 375 376 377
Vanguard Proposal
After learning of the Chaos Outer Gods, Houtu convenes the Ancestor Witches and proposes that the Witch Clan volunteer as the Primordial World's vanguard rather than recklessly begin a war. Zhenyuanzi regards this judgment as evidence that the Witch Clan has changed under her influence. 498 499
Trivia
- Houtu's tribe is distinct from the other Witch Clan tribes: its semi-subterranean dwellings, central cave, and restrained disposition reflect its affinity with earth and reincarnation. 256
- Her title of Lady Pingxin is a formal confirmation of authority she already partly possessed over Reincarnation, rather than a wholly new grant of power. 273
- She is described as second only to Zhenyuanzi and Lord Wanshouyuan in the Earth Dao lineage's status. 371
