Background / History

Origins and Rivalry with Qiankun

Yin Yang and Daoist Qiankun both originated from the remnants of Chaos Demon Gods, but their philosophies brought them into conflict. Yin Yang pursued balance, mutual generation, and cooperation; Qiankun sought to stabilize the four directions and control everything through the Heaven and Earth Cauldron. Their open and covert struggles continued for countless epochs 140.

When Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun destroyed Qiankun, Yin Yang felt relieved and credited Zhenyuanzi with avenging him. Admiration for Zhenyuanzi’s strength and decisiveness prompted him to consider friendship—and an alliance that would leave him with one fewer potential enemy 140.

Founding the Wuzhuang Temple Alliance

The Heavenly Dao’s complete manifestation disrupted Yin Yang’s plans, many of which depended on ambiguity and disorder. After extensive deductions, he judged cooperation with the Three Races too dangerous, Luohu too extreme, Hongjun too inscrutable, and Yang Mei too detached. He chose to approach Zhenyuanzi before the younger power’s influence fully solidified 155 157.

Yin Yang selected the Northern Profound Origin Water Controlling Banner as his gift. Its defensive role overlapped with his Taiji Diagram, whereas its Water essence could materially strengthen Zhenyuanzi’s Earth-based cultivation. He presented it at Longevity Mountain, where Zhenyuanzi accepted both the treasure and the obligation attached to the favor 158 160.

Inside Wuzhuang Temple, Yin Yang demonstrated how his Dao could harmonize Hongyun’s cloud Qi, Zhenyuanzi’s earth-vein Qi, and the Earth, Fire, and Water banners. After discussing the ambitions of Hongjun, Luohu, and Yang Mei, the three cultivators formed an alliance under a Heavenly Dao oath. Yin Yang followed Zhenyuanzi’s example by not immediately absorbing the merit bestowed upon them 162 164 165.

Dao–Demon War

Hongjun sought Yin Yang’s assistance against Luohu because Yin Yang Balance opposed the demon ancestor’s extreme disorder. In battle, Yin Yang transformed the Taiji Diagram into a Golden Bridge to suppress the Twelve-petal World-Ending Black Lotus and attacked Luohu’s spear-bearing arm with his twin swords 186 194.

The exertion left him vulnerable when Luohu detonated the western earth veins. Zhenyuanzi extended the Earth Book’s shield over him, allowing him to regulate his breathing and survive the explosion. Afterward, Yin Yang openly acknowledged that he might have perished without that protection; Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun treated the rescue as an ally’s duty rather than a debt requiring ceremony 195 196 197.

Teaching and Preparation for Transcendence

Yin Yang nourished the Golden-Winged Great Peng with the Taiji Diagram and Yin Yang Sword, becoming his acknowledged master. He later accepted Fuxi after recognizing the affinity between Fuxi’s Bagua transformations and his own Dao 211 216.

Following further seclusion, Yin Yang found new insights in the Six Paths of Reincarnation: their distinct yet interconnected cycles clarified opposition, unity, life, and death. He joined Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun in deciding to enter Chaos, where Yin Yang had not yet separated and the conditions better suited their independent paths to Dao attainment 238 297 326.

Proving the Dao in Chaos

During the journey with Zhenyuanzi, Hongyun, and Nuwa, Yin Yang recognized his breakthrough opportunity. His companions stabilized the surrounding Chaos while he manifested pure Yin and Yang directly through his Great Dao—not through a spiritual treasure 329.

He unfolded the cycle from Yin Yang into the Four Symbols, Eight Trigrams, and all things, then returned those manifestations to their source. This completed his breakthrough into Primordial Chaos Great Luo. He remained composed, crediting his companions’ protection, Chaos’s opportunities, and accumulated insights rather than treating the achievement as grounds for pride 330 331.

Yang Mei subsequently appeared and exchanged Dao insights with him as an ancient acquaintance and fellow seeker. Their Yin Yang and Space manifestations complemented rather than opposed each other. After Yang Mei’s departure, Yin Yang offered protection while Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun prepared their own breakthroughs; he stood ready to intervene during Hongyun’s dangerous transformation, though intervention proved unnecessary 331 332 334.

Supporting the Earthly Dao

At the Netherworld’s Reincarnation Core, Yin Yang consolidated his new realm and contemplated the Creation Green Lotus’s connection to the origin preceding Yin Yang’s division. He also assisted Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun in refining and applying Great Dao source liquid to the Reincarnation Disk, estimating that the infusion strengthened the Earthly Dao’s foundations by at least thirty percent 365 369 370.

His later work included creating individualized Great Dao diagrams for younger cultivators and supplying the Taiji Balance pivot for Longevity Mountain’s Earth Carries All Heavens Eternal Treasure Rotation Undying Great Formation 389 390 391.

Imperial Tutor and Later Counsel

Yin Yang accepted responsibility as Imperial Tutor to guide Fuxi toward the Heavenly Emperor position. He initially observed the human Fuxi from concealment, then approached as a wandering elder to discuss the young leader’s difficulties 461 463.

When Fuxi’s Eight Trigrams emerged without triggering his expected return to position, Yin Yang sought Zhenyuanzi’s help. Zhenyuanzi identified Di Jun’s He Tu and Luo Shu as a possible means of translating profound Innate principles into forms usable by humans, and instructed Yin Yang to return to the Fengyan Tribe to steady Fuxi while he negotiated the loan 465 466.

Yin Yang continued advising Zhenyuanzi on wider institutions and alliances. He identified the need for an impartial, universally credible hub for the proposed trading network, and later was selected alongside Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun for a mission concerning Yang Mei 487 496.

Appearance

  • Ordinary guise: An unremarkable middle-aged Daoist wearing a Yin Yang robe, with a long beard 157.
  • Eyes: Reveal visions of the sun and moon rising and sinking and Heaven and Earth overturning when his power is not fully concealed 157.
  • Cultivation aura: Circulating black-and-white Yin Yang Qi, often forming a Taiji pattern 162 326.
  • After Dao attainment: Appears free of worldly aura and oppressive pressure, embodying harmony and completeness rather than visibly overwhelming force 331.
  • Disguise among humans: Conceals his aura completely and presents himself as an elderly wandering wise man 463.

Personality

Yin Yang is calculating, patient, and attentive to timing. He rehearses diplomatic exchanges, assesses the practical value of treasures, and prefers securing an ally early to offering help after that ally no longer needs it. His gift to Zhenyuanzi is generous but deliberately chosen to create a consequential bond 157 158 159.

His strategic caution develops into genuine loyalty. After Zhenyuanzi saves him, his gratitude is explicit; after proving the Dao, he credits his friends and offers them protection in return. He teaches his disciples wholeheartedly, but can impose strict discipline when their temperament obstructs cultivation 197 212 331 332 390.

He welcomes complementary perspectives while remaining alert to imbalance. He warns that Yuanshi’s order could become rigidity and Tongtian’s drive to break constraints could become destructive recklessness, but accepts Zhenyuanzi’s counterargument without insisting on his own prediction 440.

Abilities & Skills

Yin Yang Balance

His central Dao treats Yin and Yang as mutually dependent forces of transformation, not merely opposing powers 162.

  • Harmonizes different Dao energies without forcibly suppressing them, including cloud Qi, earth-vein Qi, and elemental banner auras 162.
  • Redirects nearby Chaos streams through an equilibrium field extending three zhang around his body 157.
  • Dissolves shattered Law fragments into primal spiritual energy that he can absorb 157.
  • At Primordial Chaos level, brings distinction, motion, order, and vitality into Yang Mei’s spatial domain 332.
  • Teaches that physical body, primordial spirit, and Laws must develop a reciprocal cycle rather than one overwhelming another 479.

Evolution and Return to Origin

His Dao-proving method unfolds multiplicity from Yin Yang and then reverses the process 330.

  • Manifests the Four Symbols as Dark Water, Li Fire, Azure Wood, and Geng Metal before evolving the Eight Trigrams 330.
  • Makes Great Dao Laws visible as a vast Taiji phantom independent of the Taiji Diagram treasure 329.
  • Attains Sage-equivalent standing through his own Dao rather than Heavenly Dao appointment 331.
  • Later explores the Creation Green Lotus’s primordial point of possibility before Yin Yang divides; this is further comprehension, not a documented higher-realm breakthrough 365.

Divination and Strategic Deduction

Yin Yang uses Yin Yang Qi, trigrams, and Innate Trigram Runes to examine changing circumstances 155 157.

  • Perceives threads of fate and searches for openings within larger power structures 164.
  • Deduces which treasures and alliances will best support long-term survival 157 158.
  • Does not possess infallible foresight: the Heavenly Dao’s sudden manifestation disrupts his preparations 155.

Yin Yang Evasion and Concealment

  • Travels as Yin Yang Escape Light 198.
  • Integrates his understanding of speed into the Yin Yang Evasion Technique taught to Golden-Winged Great Peng 212.
  • Suppresses his aura until he resembles an almost nonexistent shadow; a peerless great power deliberately probing could still detect him 157.

Dao Instruction

His teaching includes immersive Dao manifestations and individually tailored diagrams rather than fixed prescriptions for attainment 386 389 390.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Taiji Diagram — Innate Supreme Treasure and one of the Three Treasures of World-Opening. Settles Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind and disrupts Yin Yang and the Five Elements. Its Golden Bridge form suppresses Luohu’s Black Lotus; its inner world later serves as Jin Peng’s closed-door training ground 158 194 390.
  • Yin Yang Sword / Yin Yang Twin Swords — Companion top-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure, manifesting as black-and-white sword lights. The paired swords split light and shadow, sever Yin Yang, and can sever karma 158 164.
  • Northern Profound Origin Water Controlling Banner — Formerly held by Yin Yang. He gifts it to Zhenyuanzi because it better serves Zhenyuanzi’s path and adds little to his own existing defenses 158 160.
  • Innate Trigram Runes — Used for divination and extensive calculations concerning the changed Heavenly Dao order 157.

Relationships

  • Zhenyuanzi — Sworn ally and close friend. Their relationship begins with a calculated gift, becomes life-saving cooperation during the Dao–Demon war, and continues through mutual protection and Earthly Dao projects 160 165 195 332 370.
  • Hongyun / Red Cloud — Sworn ally and fellow seeker. Hongyun protects Yin Yang’s breakthrough, learns from his Dao manifestation, and receives Yin Yang’s support during his own attainment 165 329 330 334.
  • Golden-Winged Great Peng / Jin Peng — Eldest disciple. Yin Yang nourishes his Innate Yin Yang foundation, teaches him evasion and speed principles, and later confines him within the Taiji Diagram to overcome restlessness 211 212 390.
  • Fuxi — Disciple chosen for his Bagua transformations. Yin Yang later serves as his Imperial Tutor and guides his human incarnation toward the Heavenly Emperor role 216 461 463 466.
  • Nuwa — Martial niece through Zhenyuanzi. She learns from Yin Yang’s breakthrough and Dao discourse and thanks him for undertaking Fuxi’s guidance 329 330 332 461.
  • Yang Mei — Ancient acquaintance and fellow Chaos survivor. Their post-breakthrough exchange mutually deepens the Yin Yang and Space Great Daos 331 332.
  • Daoist Qiankun — Longstanding rival whose controlling philosophy opposed Yin Yang’s balance-oriented Dao. Yin Yang celebrates his destruction 140.
  • Hongjun — A powerful figure Yin Yang initially regards as difficult to gauge; later a Dao-discussion partner and wartime collaborator against Luohu 157 174 186 194.
  • Luohu — Enemy whose extreme chaos threatens the foundations of Yin Yang’s Dao 186 194.
