The blinding light had now completely faded, and Gu Mian could see his surroundings clearly. He was in a somewhat impoverished little village, surrounded by old-looking mud-brick houses with tiled roofs.
And Gu Mian was standing in the village's "square."
Calling it a village square was a stretch. It was really just a fairly open patch of ground. People surrounded him on all sides. They were gaunt and dressed in rags, gathered around him and excitedly discussing something.
Their conversation was all about what Gu Mian had just heard.
More than a dozen large tables had been set up on the square, piled high with food. Though the spread looked plentiful, a closer look showed it wasn't particularly lavish. Stewed potatoes, fried potatoes, and steamed potatoes took up more than half the table space. The rest consisted of healthy green vegetables, with barely any meat in sight.
A few more fireworks burst overhead.
Gu Mian looked up at the sky.
It was daytime, so the fireworks weren't very noticeable. Well, actually, even at night they would've been barely visible.
They looked more like firecrackers tossed into the sky, serving only to make some noise.
