Background / History
Konoha Career and Defection
Orochimaru served under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. During the Third Shinobi World War, he commanded Konoha troops and frequently worked with Shikaku. He later recalls that his forces rarely lost, with Hanzo standing out as an exception 60 268 410.
His estrangement from Konoha involved both forbidden experimentation and a conflict of ideals with Hiruzen. After being expelled, he contemplated how to kill his former teacher, but Ingetsu ultimately deprived him of that opportunity. Despite his defection, Orochimaru preferred conducting research in Konoha to remaining in the Land of Rice Fields 133 340.
Alliance Before the Uchiha Massacre
Before the massacre, Ingetsu—also called Yinyue—contacted Orochimaru through his hidden Konoha network. Ingetsu proposed the Konoha Collapse Plan and his planned Uchiha defection; Orochimaru agreed to provide support in return for three pairs of Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Their opening strategy was to draw Konoha’s pursuit forces northwest into the Valley of Sanction and destroy them together 54.
Orochimaru supplied an Izanagi scroll and an experimental Red Pill, then sent Kimimaro to assist the fugitives. After Danzo’s death, he appropriated hidden experimental bases, records, materials, and Hashirama Cells, directing his Sound ninja to transport the spoils to Otogakure 54 55 206.
Kakashi’s Eye and the Valley of Sanction
At Ingetsu’s request, Orochimaru ambushed Kakashi’s pursuit force with snakes and seized Kakashi’s left Sharingan. Tenzo rescued Kakashi before Orochimaru could finish him. Orochimaru suspected the apparently ordinary Three-Tomoe eye concealed a secret, but stored it rather than immediately transplanting it 56 57.
During the wider battle, he intercepted Itachi and Obito while seeking Itachi’s body. His Eight-Branched Serpent could contest Itachi’s Susanoo physically, but could not overcome its spirit weapons. Distracted by Jiraiya’s death and progressively weakened, Orochimaru was sealed inside the Totsuka Blade 66 70 71.
Ingetsu later opened the blade’s seal and released him, restoring his physical body. Orochimaru rejoined the Uchiha group voluntarily and received the promised six Sharingan. His defeat also persuaded him that manipulating Ingetsu over Kakashi’s eye would be dangerously foolish 70 76 77 80.
Otogakure and Reanimation Work
Orochimaru offered Otogakure as a refuge and agreed to settle the Uzumaki and Tsuchigumo clans there. Ingetsu assigned Kabuto to learn under him, and Orochimaru subsequently entrusted Kabuto with village management while pursuing Shennong, eye transplantation, and reanimation research 87 89 97 100.
Although warned against returning to Akatsuki, Orochimaru went back seeking research funds and confirmation of Ingetsu’s intelligence. Sasori and Kakuzu attacked him; the defeated body dissolved into snakes, revealing a Snake Clone and allowing his escape 80 100 105.
He then infiltrated Konoha, using explosions elsewhere in the village to cover the theft of powerful shinobi remains. After Ingetsu took control of Konoha, Orochimaru returned to his former underground laboratory and organized a mass Uchiha reanimation project for village reconstruction and administration 115 140 146 151.
Akatsuki Pursuit and Scientific Expansion
Orochimaru’s intelligence outposts detected Akatsuki approaching Konoha, prompting him to warn the Uchiha Great Elder and recommend avoiding a confrontation. Nevertheless, Sasori, Kisame, and White Zetsu trapped him in an Iron Sand prison. He contacted Ingetsu for help and disclosed that Anko held the secret to his resurrection 184 190 191.
By his subsequent return to Konoha, he credited Ingetsu with saving him from needing a resurrection method. Their research partnership expanded into extracting Hashirama Cells from White Zetsu, implanting cells into Ingetsu, reanimating Minato, and investigating Jūgo-cell fusion 203 206 207 208 211 215 217.
Sunagakure Campaign and Later Leadership
Orochimaru led Konoha forces to intervene in Gaara’s abduction, directing his subordinates to rescue the jinchūriki while Ingetsu’s arrangements disrupted Obito’s White Zetsu army. His forces secured Gaara, Chiyo, and Ebizo before the confrontation’s resolution 243 252.
After Sunagakure surrendered, Ingetsu tasked him with incorporating it into Konoha. Orochimaru entered the village under a sandstorm with Chiyo and Ebizo guiding his troops, then oversaw the Land of Wind’s migration. He later called on the two elders when the Land of Rivers’ daimyo ordered ninja to kill him 255 268 289 322 323.
Later chapters depict Orochimaru as acting Hokage during Urashiki’s attacks. He redirected other villages’ anger toward Hiruzen and offered joint research into the Nine-Tails as a means of assembling a defensive alliance. During the subsequent crisis, he ordered his subordinates to evacuate Tsunade and Jiraiya while he remained behind 410 413 417.
His later laboratory work includes collaboration with Amado on Seimei’s resurrection ninja tool and a gene-serum program intended to make Kekkei Genkai widely available. The serum project still has a failure rate of approximately fifty percent 434 452.
Appearance
Orochimaru is tall and exceptionally pale, with a sinister, androgynous face and conspicuously serpentine features 55.
- Eyes: Golden, vertically slit pupils, framed by purple eyeshadow; temporarily replaced with Three-Tomoe Sharingan during his Akatsuki confrontation 66 105.
- Tongue: Long and frequently used to lick his lips when excited or covetous 55 66 140.
- Clothing: Wears Akatsuki’s red-cloud robe, later Uchiha clan robes; his ordinary pale-yellow clothing is visible when he discards his Akatsuki robe 55 80 105.
- Transformed body: Can become an immense, white-scaled eight-headed serpent or alter his lower body into snakes 66 116 191.
Personality
Curiosity, immortality, and experimentation govern Orochimaru’s choices more than institutional loyalty. He argues that life has no inherent meaning and follows whatever interests him. He also presents his pursuit of immortality as a response to a shinobi world built on war, hatred, and competition for resources 96 97.
He is ruthless and transactional: he covets exceptional bodies and dōjutsu, misappropriates research funding, and treats prospective enemies as experimental material. During Sunagakure’s surrender, he privately considers betrayal advantageous because it would justify a massacre and provide more research specimens 66 80 268.
His attachment to former teammates is not entirely absent. Jiraiya’s death distracts him in battle, and he admits that the separation of his team’s ideals once devastated him. However, he rationalizes Jiraiya’s death as preserving his ideals rather than allowing him to change 70 97.
Orochimaru increasingly regards Ingetsu as both a reliable partner and someone capable of changing the world. Admiration, practical benefit, and recognition of Ingetsu’s overwhelming strength reinforce his cooperation. He also wins followers through generous rewards and opportunities, while his later gene-serum work gives him a pronounced sense of responsibility 70 190 332 452.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques and Summoning
- Snake Binding Curse: Restrains opponents with giant snakes emerging from his sleeves; used to immobilize Kakashi during the theft of his eye 57.
- Snake Clones: A defeated clone can dissolve into numerous snakes. Multiple clones also assist with laboratory work 105 207.
- Body alteration: Transforms his lower body into snakes for rapid movement, evasion, pursuit, and strangulation 116 191.
- Giant snake summons: Uses large snakes for transport and combat, including Manda 59 60 93.
- Messenger snakes: Small white snakes carry scrolls, writing materials, and preserved research samples 55 56 57 80.
Eight-Branched Serpent
- An S-Rank forbidden technique that transforms his body into a gigantic white serpent with eight heads 66.
- Its physical power is slightly greater than the particular Susanoo Itachi uses against him 66 70.
- Its scales cannot withstand the Totsuka Blade, and the technique provides no successful escape from that weapon’s sealing effect 70 71.
Substitution and Resurrection Contingencies
- Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique: Emerges from a ruined body like a snake shedding its skin, surviving apparently fatal Iron Sand wounds 191.
- Uses bodily dissolution and emergence through snakes to negate the advantage of Kakashi’s successful Raikiri strike 57.
- Identifies Anko as holding a secret to his resurrection, though the mechanism is not explained in the supplied account 191.
- These survival methods do not prevent him from becoming exhausted, trapped, or dependent on outside rescue 70 191 206.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Modifies the technique so that even a small piece of dried flesh can serve as the deceased person’s physical material 115.
- Uses living sacrifices, including captured enemy ninja and White Zetsu, to produce reanimated bodies 146 211.
- Organizes large-scale resurrection and teaches its principles to Tamao and other Uchiha 146.
- Inserts control kunai into reanimated subjects; Minato briefly regains agency and forms seals faster than Orochimaru can bind him 211.
- Cannot use Fugaku’s cremated ashes with his modified procedure 146.
Sharingan
- Transplants and activates a pair of Three-Tomoe Sharingan, then attempts to assess their contribution through combat 100 105.
- Covets Itachi’s Mangekyō and body but avoids direct eye contact after Ingetsu warns him about the danger 66.
- His possession of Kakashi’s eye does not establish that he personally masters Kamui; Ingetsu later absorbs the eye’s power 57 77.
Wind Release and Defensive Summoning
- Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Produces a strong gale that scatters Iron Sand, although it does not destabilize the Third Kazekage puppet 191.
- Triple Rashōmon: Summons defensive gates to block Kisame’s massive Water Release attack 191.
Biological and Forbidden-Technique Research
- Cell extraction and implantation: Extracts Hashirama Cells from White Zetsu and performs the injection preceding Ingetsu’s successful chakra-based Wood Release 206 207 208.
- Jūgo-cell research: Guides Ingetsu’s fusion experiment while warning that the cells can cause madness and violent instability 215 216 217.
- Sharingan cloning: Studies Shin’s unusual transplant compatibility to develop cloned soldiers possessing Sharingan; mature mass production remains a research goal in the documented discussion 332.
- Resurrection tools: Collaborates with Amado on the ninja tool left by Seimei 434.
- Kekkei Genkai serum: Oversees experimental gene injections intended to broaden access to bloodline abilities; the high failure rate remains a major limitation 452.
Intelligence, Command, and Diplomacy
- Maintains undercover contacts, intelligence outposts, and Sound-ninja reporting networks 54 115 184.
- Commands Konoha, Sound, and reanimated forces during operations involving Sunagakure 243 252 268.
- As acting Hokage, combines blame-shifting with an offer of shared Nine-Tails research to encourage cooperation against an enemy beyond ordinary village strength 410 413.
