Background and origins

The Demon Race was created through the Blood Sea, a Creation Divine Object originally belonging to Night God. While Night God was weakened, the Progenitor stole access to its creation authority. He used that power to create the Thirteen Demon Gods; the wider race emerged as a by-product of his efforts to control the Blood Sea 1369 1370.

The Demon Gods initially remembered neither their creation nor any life before becoming Demon Gods. The accepted account—that the race had developed independently and that the Progenitor’s power came from Night God’s Treasure—concealed its origins 1369.

Although artificially created, the race subsequently multiplied, cultivated, fought wars, acquired resources and intermarried with other races over tens of thousands of years. The Giant Demon God rejected the Progenitor’s claim that their accumulated strength was merely his gift: the initial Creation Power had grown enormously through the efforts of successive generations 1400.

The Progenitor nevertheless regarded this growth as nourishment he could eventually reclaim. He proposed consuming the Demon Gods and recreating them afterward, treating the race as a renewable source of cultivation resources rather than independent beings 1400.

Traits and hierarchy

• Demons are born Extraordinary, with powerful bodies and innate Demon Eyes that aid combat and grant some affinity for Laws 1008. The Divine Soul of a Demon Race member bears an eye on its forehead 1413.
• Their growth is slow and their birth rate low. An ordinary demon may take a century to advance from the lower to the middle ranks of Extraordinary 1008.
• Bloodline determines standing. The Progenitor stands above the Thirteen Demon Gods, and Demon Kings command forces and territories beneath them 303 1157.
• Demons bear both the Blood Sea’s origin imprint and the Progenitor’s soul imprint. These marks give their creator a means of tracing and refining them 1376.
• Pure-blood demons consider themselves noble, while half-blood descendants of other races and individuals transformed through True Demon Blood occupy the lowest social standing. Su Qilu became a demon through such a transformation 219 284.
• Bloodline superiority has practical effects as well as social significance. Pure-blood demons can suppress half-blood demons, and Demon Gods can immobilize lesser demons through bloodline suppression 827 1113 1283.
• Purer bloodlines increase the likelihood of awakening powerful innate abilities. Black’s awakening of a Space Ability was particularly significant because of its connection to the Space Law, one of the Supreme Laws 389.
• Pure-blood demons have particular difficulty producing children, and many therefore treasure their offspring. Their long lifespans can allow family relationships and disputes to extend across centuries or millennia 510 565.
• Demons can burn their demonic blood and Demonic Acupoint for a short-lived increase in strength. Black considered using this to rise temporarily from Seventh Rank to Eighth Order, at the cost of subsequent weakness, cultivation regression and potentially losing the ability to advance further 382.
• Lightning Power is a natural bane of Demonic Energy. Other demons were astonished when Black wielded it despite appearing to be one of their own 569.
• The race can sense the death of a Demon God through its bloodline and identify which Demon God has fallen. These events are marked by the Bloodline Funeral Bell 963 1102.

Bloodline restraints

The Blood Sea mark is rooted in demons’ Soul Origins and transmitted through their bloodlines. The Undead Demon God attempted to escape it through soul separation, rebirth and Body Seizure, but these methods failed because changing bodies did not remove the underlying Origin mark 1394.

The marks do not allow the Progenitor to erase the entire race with a single thought. Large-scale refinement requires additional means, including the Twelve Creation Pearls and the Origin Creation Grand Formation 1376.

Progenitor Essence Blood can heal severe injuries and improve cultivation, but it also establishes a subtle connection that facilitates the Progenitor’s monitoring and eventual consumption of its recipients 1248 1425.

Power Progression

Wars and territory

The Demon Race fought across several fronts rather than concentrating its forces against humanity. It maintained wars with the Human Race, Winged Human Race, Demon Clan and Insectoid Race; the Elf Race had also fought it for tens of thousands of years 299 904 960. Its forces conquered the Star Beast World, defeated its Beast Emperor and seized the world’s Origin 391.

Demon Gods were the equivalent of human Heavenly Kings. At one point the Demon Race had thirteen Demon Gods to humanity’s three Heavenly Kings, though only three Demon Gods faced humanity directly 299. Its domains contained cities, mines and other resource holdings controlled by Demon Kings. Captives from other races, including humans and Winged Humans, were used as mine laborers 914 1151 1157.

The conquest of Star Beast World left it a wasteland. Its surviving beasts were enslaved or reduced to weapons of war, providing humanity with a warning of what defeat could mean for its own world 560 970.

The race’s extended battle lines became a major vulnerability as its losses mounted. Conflicts included the struggle against the Demon Clan over the Ancient Demon Ruins and repeated Insectoid attacks. After the human and Winged Human battlefields suffered severe defeats, the Insectoid Race launched a counteroffensive serious enough for the Giant Demon God to return to the Ancestral Land seeking reinforcements 904 960 1115.

Conflict with humanity

The Demon Race’s slow growth and difficult reproduction made humanity’s rapid development increasingly threatening. Zhang Xuan identified the elimination of human prodigies as a strategic objective, while the deaths of Demon Kings were particularly difficult for the demons to replace 1008 1009.

After repeated defeats, Moloch proposed using hostages and a deathmatch arena to expose humanity’s hidden strength, eliminate young talents, damage morale and buy time to reorganize the remaining Demon Gods. A raid on the Third War Zone captured two Human Kings and 347 elite soldiers; additional captives included Fengying Country’s Speaker, seventeen senators and two direct descendants of Human Kings 964 970 1006.

Negotiations produced a three-match Human-Demon Deathmatch Arena involving Extraordinary, King and Heavenly King combat. The agreed venue was the Execution Platform outside Meteor God Valley 1009 1010.

Internal rivalries and cooperation

Rivalries between Demon God factions could outweigh their common hostility toward humanity. The Undead Demon God and Succubus God had previously helped create an opportunity for humans to kill the Blood Demon God. Black later persuaded the Blood Demon faction to retaliate through a similar arrangement, presenting it as a tacit understanding rather than open friendship with humans 608.

The Blood Demon God subsequently sent envoys to negotiate with Heavenly King Hall. His faction’s cooperation was unprecedented in the human delegates’ experience, and he later became a source of intelligence for humanity 620 904.

Ancestral Land and covert activities

The Ancestral Land was an enormous city and a place many demons longed to visit. The Progenitor remained confined there before the Blood Sea confrontation, while the Second Demon God handled substantial administrative responsibilities 1102 1237 1245 1430.

Humans, Winged Humans, members of the Demon Clan and other races repeatedly infiltrated Demon Race territory. During his oversight of the Ancestral Land, the Second Demon God conducted annual purges, with captured spies tortured and publicly executed 1430.

The Demon Race also maintained secret laboratories experimenting on both humans and demons. Gu Zhaoxi reported that her captain, Zhao Mingyuan, had been transformed into a monster in one such facility 1245.

Collapse

• Loss of the Demon Gods: Five of the original thirteen had fallen by the deaths of Edmund, Felix and Lucille; the count later rose to seven, then eight within a year 963 1332 1391. E’nan Demon God’s death marked the sixth loss, and the Giant Demon God’s returning entourage described the military situation as an unprecedented disaster 1102 1115.
• The Progenitor’s scheme exposed: The Undead Demon God discovered that the Progenitor had planted a mark in demons’ bodies and Soul Origins. The Progenitor confirmed that he intended to consume their flesh and souls to advance his cultivation 1399 1400.
• Resistance: The Second Demon God sought a way for the race to survive. The Fifth defended him openly, while the First and Blood Demon Gods later resisted the Progenitor 1399 1404. The Second Demon God’s divinations led him into the Blood Sea in search of an object capable of breaking the Shackles of Destiny 1394.
• Defeat of the resisting Demon Gods: The Progenitor overwhelmed the leading Demon Gods. The Blood Demon God used his affinity with the Xuanming Blood Sea to delay him and buy time for the First Demon God, but even his greatly amplified Blood Law could not penetrate the Progenitor’s defenses 1405.
• The First Demon God’s final appeal: Rather than request rebirth or eternal life from Night God, the First Demon God asked for his people to survive free from enslavement and consumption 1411.
• Mass sacrifice: During his battle with Night God, the Progenitor invoked the bloodline bond to drain demons’ vitality, Divine Souls and power. Hundreds of millions were sacrificed as his power surged toward a breakthrough; Night God subsequently cut off the flow of flesh and blood, preventing the intended continued advancement to Half-Step God King 1415 1416 1418.
• Aftermath: Night God altered the sacrificial formation, driving surviving demons mad and leaving the Ancestral Land in ruins. The Second Demon God had also hidden more than a hundred Human-Demon hybrid children behind a sealing formation 1413 1418 1426.
• Discovery by humanity: The human expedition overran three major strongholds before discovering the collapse of organized resistance. Its leaders recognized that the force responsible for the demons’ condition could also threaten humanity, prompting them to continue toward the Ancestral Land 1420 1421.
• Continued destruction of the survivors: Large numbers of maddened demons remained, including Demon Kings whose instinctive combat awareness survived. Su Ye killed approximately half of one vast concentration before the Progenitor arrived and devoured the remainder to increase his strength 1510 1511.
• The Progenitor’s end: The Progenitor himself ultimately fell during his continued conflict with Su Ye 1519.

Madness and surviving bloodlines

Night God’s modification left the sacrificial formation linking the Divine Souls of the demons rather than simply draining their bodies. Their accumulated voices and obsessions drove the surviving population mad and subjected the Progenitor to continuous mental contamination. By the time Su Ye encountered him later, the Progenitor had also lost his reason and was searching instinctively for power to devour 1418 1510.

Despite the loss of organized military strength, the maddened survivors were not harmless. Some retained enough combat instinct and Law Power to attack Su Ye fiercely, although they could not withstand his Middle God strength 1511.

Black’s clone was unaffected by the original sacrifice despite occupying a pure-blood demon body. Demons sheltered within his Taixu Space were likewise unharmed by the sacrificial call 1415.

The Second Demon God’s hidden children represented a separate contingency. Their bloodlines, auras and Blood Sea marks had been concealed by a sealing formation. They had been isolated from birth, received no Demon Race inheritance, learned neither its language nor writing, and never harmed anyone. After learning that they were Human-Demon hybrids, Black accepted the First Demon God’s request to save them and received the formation’s location and complete method for opening it 1413.
