Kyle Rayner had barely led everyone through Earth's atmosphere when his Green Lantern ring began beeping with a barrage of alarms.
Fortunately, they had already entered an oxygenated environment, so he calmly withdrew most of the energy sustaining the sphere of light.
He left only a platform supporting Joker and Wilson Morgan.
Then Kyle solemnly told everyone that the Red Lantern Corps seemed to be pursuing them.
"They probably imprisoned Shane and broke their promise."
With no one to take charge, Kyle decided to step up temporarily. He had already worked out their tactics.
Some of them would stay behind to cover the retreat and intercept the Red Lanterns.
He would take Joker and Wilson, who couldn't fight in the air, down to the ground first, then quickly notify the Justice League and hand Cyborg the coordinate data Hal Jordan had left behind.
Amazo hovered nearby, holding Lobo. Kyle hadn't counted on either of them in the first place, since neither qualified as a superhero.
But Jason and Shazam exchanged a look, showing no intention of responding to his plan either.
Kyle was dumbfounded. Just as he was thinking how hard this team was to lead, he sensed a disturbance in the atmosphere.
That dazzling streak of red light shot over and stopped in front of Kyle Rayner. "Why is everyone hanging around here?"
Shane, his whole body blazing with fierce red light, looked at him curiously.
Before Kyle could answer, Shane frowned and began slapping at his body.
On closer inspection, that dazzling red light was actually a collection of scarlet patches stuck to Shane.
They not only radiated highly concentrated Red Lantern energy, but kept burrowing into his body as though alive.
Shane slapped at himself so hard he nearly struck sparks, but still couldn't get them off.
