A Legacy from Their Parents

Uchiha Hironobu left behind the Sealing Scroll, offered Uchiha Yuan a few simple words of comfort, and told him to come to him anytime if he had trouble making ends meet. Then he turned and left.

To be honest, although Uchiha Yuan had inherited this body's memories, they hadn't affected him too much. After all, the Original Host had only been ten.

Besides, a month had passed, and time had already dulled much of the grief. Uchiha Yuan no longer felt particularly distressed over their deaths.

But since he had accepted this body, taking care of their affairs—and, if possible, avenging them—had become his responsibility.

Then Uchiha Yuan took everything out of the Sealing Scroll.

Two small urns containing their ashes, some Ninja Tools, more than a dozen Explosive Tags, four Fire Style techniques, two Wind Style techniques, two Genjutsu, one Water Style technique, one General Ninjutsu technique, and a Tanto that could conduct Chakra.

That was basically everything Uchiha Yuan's parents owned. When they'd left for the battlefield, they'd taken it all with them, afraid that Uchiha Yuan, who was only seven at the time, wouldn't be able to protect it alone at home.

Looking at these belongings now, Uchiha Yuan couldn't help feeling a little uneasy.

After steadying himself, Uchiha Yuan put everything else away, then went out carrying his parents' ashes.

Uchiha Yuan buried them in the Uchiha Clan's cemetery. For shinobi like his parents, who had died without accomplishing anything of note, their names couldn't be carved onto the Memorial Stone, so they couldn't be buried in Konoha's cemetery.

After taking care of his parents' affairs, Uchiha Yuan returned home and looked through their inheritance.

First were the four Fire Style techniques: the C-rank Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique, Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique, and Fire Style: Flame Bullet, as well as the B-rank Fire Style: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet.

Next were two C-rank Wind Style techniques: Wind Style: Great Breakthrough and Wind Style: Violent Wind Palm.

The two Genjutsu were traditional techniques that had been widely used in Konoha since its founding. One was the D-rank Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique, and the other was the B-rank Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death.

Then there was the C-rank Water Style technique, Water Style: Water Clone Technique.

In some ways, the Water Clone Technique was similar to the Shadow Clone Technique and could be considered a General Ninjutsu technique.

But a Water Clone had only ten percent of the original's strength and couldn't travel far from its user. It was basically a weaker version of the Shadow Clone Technique.

Uchiha Yuan figured his father had used this technique. He remembered that his father's Chakra natures were Fire and Water, while his mother's were Fire and Wind.

But his father wasn't proficient in Water Style. As a member of the Uchiha Clan, he had certainly focused on Fire Style.

His mother had learned Wind Style because wind fanned flames and could increase the power of Fire Style.

The last General Ninjutsu technique was the D-rank Body Flicker Technique.

Uchiha Yuan's father had possessed the Two Tomoe Sharingan and been a Special Jonin in Konoha. If he'd awakened the Three Tomoe Sharingan, he would most likely have been promoted to Jonin. His mother hadn't awakened the Sharingan and had only been a Chunin.

Still, in Uchiha Yuan's memories, his mother had been quite capable. She had a powerful Wind Style technique she kept in reserve. That technique and the Tanto that could conduct Chakra had been left to her by Uchiha Yuan's maternal grandfather.

The technique let her channel Wind Release Chakra into the Tanto, forming a razor-sharp blade. It had been his mother's greatest asset.

But the technique wasn't among the things left behind. His parents had supposedly been killed by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, so they most likely hadn't had a chance to destroy the Sealing Scroll. There was only one explanation: someone had taken the technique.

The Uchiha Clan wouldn't do something so despicable. In the month since arriving in this world, Uchiha Yuan had come to understand the clan very well.

Its members were confident and proud. They would never steal the belongings of one of their own.

That meant it could only have been someone from Konoha. Danzo? Or the Third Hokage?

Uchiha Yuan personally leaned toward Danzo. Taking someone else's family technique was exactly the kind of vile thing he would do.

Two days later, fully recovered, Uchiha Yuan returned to the Ninja Academy.

It was Konoha's 42nd year, and the Third Great Ninja War had been raging for three years.

Last year, the Ninja Academy had forced all its fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-year students to graduate and sent them to the battlefield as cannon fodder.

Among that year's fourth-year students were Namiashi Raidō and Yamashiro Aoba, who had some notable roles in the original story.

There were many more familiar faces in the class behind them: Ebisu, Shiranui Genma, Sarutobi Asuma, Yūhi Kurenai, Might Guy, Morino Ibiki, Uchiha Obito, Nohara Rin, and Kato Shizune.

Those whose ages differed by one or two years were in the same cohort, since children usually entered Konoha's Ninja Academy between the ages of five and seven.

Uchiha Yuan was in their cohort too, but he wasn't in the same class as these future pillars of Konoha.

Even though they weren't in the same class, most students in the same cohort knew one another, especially members of the same clan.

Uchiha Yuan was a year older than Uchiha Obito. Yuan was ten, while Obito was only nine.

Obito was young, but he was practically "famous" throughout the Uchiha Clan.

On one hand, Obito's grades at the Ninja Academy were terrible; he ranked at the bottom in every subject. On the other, he was nothing like most Uchiha. He was kind, optimistic, and eager to improve. He was always talking about becoming Hokage, as if he'd been completely brainwashed by the Will of Fire.

But it was precisely because of Obito's personality that he'd made it into this class of elite students.

The Third Hokage must have especially liked Uchiha Clan members like him.

Following his memories, Uchiha Yuan made his way to Class 2, Grade 4. Most of the students there were young members of Konoha's major clans or children of the village's shinobi. It was considered an elite class.

The classes behind Class 2, meanwhile, were the standard cannon-fodder classes.

Thanks to the Uchiha Clan's reputation, Uchiha Yuan didn't have many friends in this class. When he returned, his classmates only glanced at him a couple of times; none of them came over to talk.

"Uchiha Yuan, have you heard? Apparently, our year at the Ninja Academy is about to graduate." Just after Uchiha Yuan sat down, the girl in front of him, with pale eyes and a bandage covering her forehead, spoke to him.

The girl was named Hyuga Asana. Given the bitter feud between the Uchiha and Hyūga Clans, the two of them shouldn't have gotten along. But in truth, Hyuga Asana was one of Uchiha Yuan's few friends. His mother had been in the same squad as Hyuga Asana's father during the Second Shinobi World War.

"Where did you hear that?" Uchiha Yuan asked, furrowing his brow.

"My older brother is Lord Hiashi's bodyguard. I heard him say things aren't going well at the front. Looks like it's our turn to go to war." Hyuga Asana's tone was calm, without either the fervor of someone eager to uphold the Will of Fire or any fear of the battlefield.

Uchiha Yuan was used to Hyuga Asana's tone.

He remembered that before they started at the Ninja Academy, Hyuga Asana had been very lively.

But when she was four, she suddenly disappeared for a month.

When they saw each other again, that ugly mark had already been branded onto her forehead. From then on, she stopped caring about everything, eventually becoming the way she was now.
