Background / History

Asana was one of Uchiha Yuan's few childhood friends because his mother and her father had served on the same squad during the Second Shinobi World War. Even before graduation, she spoke calmly about the likelihood of being sent to the battlefield. 2

At age four, she was forcibly branded with the Caged Bird and assigned as both maidservant and bodyguard to her former friend, Hyuga Chiwa. Although Chiwa was substantially less capable, Asana was required to follow her submissively and suffered punishment when Yuan provoked Chiwa in her defense. 3 230

Asana resented the Main and Branch House system, particularly its use of birth to determine a Branch member's obedience, marriage, and life-or-death fate. She opposed the system even when other Branch members accepted it as normal. 12

After feeling powerless during the war, she accepted Orochimaru's offer to become his test subject and assistant. In exchange for her Byakugan, blood, and participation in research, she received protected status as his disciple, advanced instruction, and access to Ryūchi Cave's summoning contract. 73

Orochimaru's research eventually established that Main and Branch Family Byakugan had the same purity, undermining the Main House's claimed legitimacy. Asana and Yuan resolved to gain enough power to challenge the system directly. 102

Following genetic experimentation and her connection with the Giant Tenseigan on the moon, Asana escaped the Caged Bird's control. She ultimately abolished the Hyūga Main and Branch House system, removed the seal from Branch members, and replaced it with a limited postmortem Byakugan-destruction seal. 220 226 227

Appearance

Asana was initially a white-eyed Hyūga girl who concealed the Caged Bird mark beneath a cloth bandage. Following repeated bloodline supplementation, she developed increasingly Ōtsutsuki-like features. 2 204
