History
The Uchiha are descendants of Indra Ōtsutsuki, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki's elder son. Indra's descendants preserved his chakra and became the Uchiha Clan, inheriting the Sharingan and powerful spiritual energy. Alongside the Senju, they produced Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, who founded Konoha. 225 246
By the Third Great Ninja War, the clan had suffered severe losses: more than half of its ninja were casualties, leaving it unable to staff the Police Force without outside recruits. The loss of Sharingan users further weakened the clan's political and military position. 112 135
The wartime clan was divided between hawks and doves, while class distinctions also existed between ninja and non-ninja members, and between Sharingan users and those unable to awaken the dōjutsu. Uchiha Yuan identified these divisions and the Police Force's poor public reputation as central threats to the clan's survival. 40
After Obito's Sharingan was transplanted into Kakashi, the clan's leadership split over whether to recover the eye, honor Obito's gift, or seek compensation from Konoha. The dispute brought its internal factionalism into the open. 109 112 114
During the Night of the Nine-Tails, all Uchiha ninja joined the rescue effort; 103 were injured and 14 killed. Yuan later revealed that Root had harvested Sharingan from fallen Uchiha during the Third Great Ninja War, including eyes used by Danzō for Izanagi. 199
Yuan's role in killing Danzō, protecting Konoha from the Nine-Tails, and defeating much of the Hyūga Main Family gave him overwhelming prestige. With both major factions behind him, he challenged Fugaku Uchiha for leadership and became Clan Head. 197 200 202

Bloodline and Combat Traditions
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha Clan's Kekkei Genkai and its most closely guarded inheritance. Its five recognized forms are the One-Tomoe, Two-Tomoe, Three-Tomoe, Mangekyō, and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan; the Rinnegan is treated separately rather than as a Sharingan form. 5
| Form | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| One-Tomoe Sharingan | Enhances dynamic vision. 5 |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | Sees chakra pathways, copies taijutsu, and provides limited genjutsu resistance. 5 |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | Enables visual genjutsu and can copy non-Kekkei Genkai ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu, subject to the user's ability and chakra nature. 5 |
| Mangekyō Sharingan | Awakens unique dōjutsu and eventually Susanoo, but repeated use damages the user's eyesight and body. 5 |
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan | Removes the risk of blindness and permits the Complete Body Susanoo. 5 221 |
Only around fifty Uchiha were estimated to possess the Three-Tomoe Sharingan after the Third Great Ninja War, making them the clan's core members. 114
Genjutsu and Forbidden Dōjutsu
Three-Tomoe users may study Sharingan-exclusive genjutsu from clan scrolls. 84
The clan also preserves the forbidden techniques Izanagi and Izanami. Yuan received their training methods after becoming Third Squad leader, while Danzō's use of Izanagi with stolen Sharingan became a major source of clan outrage. 138 199
Standard Techniques and Equipment
- Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique — A signature Uchiha technique. 6
- Kunai Throwing Technique — A standard clan combat discipline, often used with complex trajectories to limit an opponent's escape routes. 6
- Clan-issued ninja tools pouch — Typically contains 100 shuriken, 10 explosive tags, 5 kunai, and 10 soldier pills. 31
Police Force Reforms
| Stage | Change |
|---|---|
| Post-war manpower crisis | The clan could no longer staff the Police Force alone, leading to outside recruitment in the Second, Third, and Fourth Squads. 135 |
| Third Squad leadership | Yuan became Third Squad leader and recruited Aburame members rather than relying solely on civilian recruits. 138 |
| Yuan's Clan Head reforms | The force expanded from four squads to five; two squads were placed entirely under non-Uchiha management, while the remaining three retained Uchiha majorities with outside support. 202 |
| Completed structure | The Fourth and Fifth Squads became entirely non-Uchiha; the Third became evenly split, while the First and Second remained roughly 70% Uchiha. 204 |
The reforms were intended to end the Police Force's identity as an exclusively Uchiha institution, reduce public hostility, and give clan members career paths beyond policing. 141 202
Relationships
- Konohagakure — The clan's relationship with the village was strained by wartime losses, political suspicion, and the Police Force's reputation. Minato Namikaze's mediation and the later reforms improved relations. 40 170
- Shimura Danzō and Root — Root agents collected Sharingan from fallen Uchiha during the Third Great Ninja War; Danzō later used those eyes to sustain repeated Izanagi activations. 199
- Kakashi Hatake — Kakashi's transplantation of Obito's gifted Sharingan caused a major clan dispute over bloodline security, Obito's final wish, and possible compensation from Konoha. 109 112 114
- Hyūga Clan — A long-standing dōjutsu-clan rival. The Uchiha's standing rose sharply after Yuan defeated half of the Hyūga Main Family while protecting Hyūga Asana. 197
- Senju Clan — A related clan through Hagoromo's lineage; the Senju preserved Asura's chakra while the Uchiha preserved Indra's. 246
Trivia
- In a parallel timeline witnessed through Dragon Vein memories, the Uchiha Clan was nearly exterminated, leaving only 157 members and 19 ninja; this contrasts sharply with the reformed, active clan of the main timeline. 238
- Uchiha patrol members encountered by Sasuke and Boruto from a parallel timeline were described as friendly and respectful, surprising Sasuke because they differed from the clan he remembered. 253
