Background / History

The Blazing Flame Sect was an old and influential martial arts sect with more than a thousand disciples and numerous capable fighters. Mu Yuan initially described such sects as groups that cultivated martial arts, protected local order, and took responsibility for worldly affairs; the Blazing Flame Sect publicly maintained this heroic image. Its members claimed to “take from the rich and give to the poor” and denied oppressing common people. 24 31

The sect’s Third Elder, Xiong Yan, led more than a dozen disciples to Qingshi County under orders from Sect Master Sun Shihu. They ostensibly came to assist Mu Yuan’s expedition against the Great Yao of Tushan, claiming that Tushan’s Yao had previously killed sect disciples. 24

During the Tushan expedition, Xiong Yan’s conduct raised Chen Guan’s suspicions. Shen Mengjin of the Phoenix Perch Sect revealed that Xiong Yan had led a Blazing Flame Sect assault on her sect a month earlier, leaving heavy casualties, imprisoning survivors, and torturing captives. Xiong Yan personally carved the character “flame” into Shen Mengjin’s forearm. 26

Mu Yuan later produced the Phoenix Perch Sect Master’s blood-stained personal token, confirming that the sect had colluded with Demons. Xiong Yan abandoned his denials, admitted the trap, and summoned hundreds of Demons under his command to kill Mu Yuan and Chen Guan. 27 Mu Yuan’s prepared Demon Suppressing Division ambush defeated Xiong Yan and the accompanying sect forces. 28

When the Demon Suppressing Division investigated the sect’s headquarters, Sun Shihu denied knowledge of Xiong Yan’s actions while hosting Mu Yuan’s party. The sect subsequently poisoned the visitors, prepared an internal assault, and kept more than three hundred Phoenix Perch Sect members imprisoned in warehouse-like cells deep within its compound. 31 32

The imprisoned Phoenix Perch Sect members were freed and joined the Demon Suppressing Division in attacking the sect. Its disciples and elders suffered severe losses, while surviving members fled or were killed by the Phoenix Perch Sect’s retaliating disciples. Sun Shihu escaped before the assault, apparently warned by someone who leaked the operation from above. 33 34

Mu Yuan ordered the Blazing Flame Sect destroyed and its grounds burned. Sun Shihu later returned to the ruins, fought Phoenix Perch Sect Master Zhao Kaishan, attempted to feign death, and was executed by Chen Guan. 35 37 38

Fire-based martial arts

The sect’s martial arts were characterized by blazing internal energy and direct, forceful attacks. Its disciples could envelop their bodies in flames capable of incinerating Yao. 25

• Blazing Flame Fist — Sun Shihu’s fire-based fist art; the sect’s martial style was described as grand, unrestrained, and focused on absolute power. 37
• Dragon Flame Fist — Xiong Yan’s technique, used to force back surrounding Demon Suppressing Division members. 28

Demon collaboration

The sect worked with Yao and Demons as part of its operations.

• Xiong Yan could summon and command hundreds of Demons during the Tushan trap. 27
• Sun Shihu kept more than a dozen fifth-layer Blood Forging Realm Demons guarding a brocade box in a secret chamber. 41

Treasure vault

The sect maintained a hidden underground treasure vault beneath its compound.
