Background / History

Qin Yanran is the celebrated daughter of Qingshi County’s immensely wealthy Qin Family, known for both exceptional business talent and beauty. While passing through an alley near Qingshi Temple, she gives the destitute Chen Guan a box of red-date pastries; moments later, black-clad assassins attack her carriage. Chen saves her after the attackers also target him. Qin Yanran later rewards him with one hundred taels of silver and promises that the Qin Family will conceal his involvement. 1 2

She is targeted again when demons enter Qingshi County. After Chen Guan saves her a second time, she invites him to Mount Tushan, explaining that the Qin Family must supply Golden Wound Medicine to the Imperial Court and needs Dragon’s Blood Resin, an ingredient found only on the demon-infested mountain. Rather than send the family’s experts into danger, she chooses to gather it herself. 7 8

During the Tushan expedition, Qin Yanran learns that assassins were sent by her father, Qin Wanshan, and the County Lieutenant.
