Background / History
Kizaru serves as a Marine Headquarters Admiral and commands its Science Force, giving him unusual access to Vegapunk’s research and the Special Science Group’s inventions. He has known Dr. Vegapunk for decades, dating back to the World Government’s breakup of MADS, and considers the scientist a close friend. 2 193 312
When Edward Teach beheaded Gorosei member MacGus Saint, Kizaru responded immediately from Marine Headquarters. He fought alongside the Gorosei but was unable to overcome Teach’s Rumble-Rumble Fruit speed and Armament Haki; Teach injured him and forced his retreat. 99
Kizaru was subsequently dispatched to defend Impel Down against Golden Lion II. He was outmaneuvered by Golden Lion II’s mind-reading Observation Haki, trapped with Seastone-tipped spikes, and later knocked into the sea by Whitebeard the Second’s Lightning Kick. Though recovered, he was kept at Impel Down and repeatedly challenged by Whitebeard the Second, leaving him injured and exhausted. 131 132 134 140
During the Ruschired Island Buster Call, Kizaru and Akainu were ordered by the Gorosei to attack Storm. Kizaru was reluctant to fight someone he knew to be Vice Admiral White Dragon and the SWORD Unit’s second-in-command, but participated because of the order. Storm defeated both Admirals; Kizaru conceded defeat and later informed Kuzan that Storm had left the Marines. 265 268 269 270
Kizaru later attempted to rescue Vegapunk from Punk Hazard, but Storm restricted his light-speed movement with Conqueror’s Haki and captured him. Vegapunk traded a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit for Kizaru’s release, after which Kizaru chose not to attempt another escape. 312 313 314 315
Zephyr eventually arrested Kizaru on suspicion that he had aligned with Storm. Although initially distrusted by the New Marines, Kizaru was accepted into their ranks and sent back to the Old Marines as an undercover agent, using his rank and speed to transmit intelligence while retaining access to both organizations. 332 333 341 352 444
Appearance
Kizaru is an older man with a weathered face, prominent stubble, and sunglasses that usually conceal his eyes. He normally wears a Marine suit and a white Justice coat. 99 129 141
- Wears sunglasses, frequently adjusting them during conversations or combat. 132 235
- Has noticeable facial stubble, which he often rubs while thinking. 141 191
- His Justice coat remains notably clean even after dangerous engagements. 223 385
- His body and clothing can become composed of or obscured by golden light while using his Devil Fruit. 131 267
Personality
Kizaru presents himself as casual, sarcastic, and perpetually reluctant to overwork. He openly complains about being assigned missions because his speed makes him the default choice for urgent deployments, and he prefers rest, food, and low-effort assignments over prolonged combat. 140 205 214 332
Despite this laziness, Kizaru does not entirely disregard his duties. He rushed to Impel Down because its destruction and a mass prison escape would endanger civilians, apprehended Vergo after the vice admiral’s suspected betrayal, and immediately answered the rescue order when Vegapunk was threatened. 129 209 312
Kizaru is highly pragmatic and self-preserving. When confronted by overwhelming opponents, he favors withdrawal or “conceding defeat” rather than suffering needless injuries. This habit is strategic rather than simple cowardice: he assesses the battlefield, recognizes unwinnable situations, and preserves himself to report or act later. 209 269 313 386
His allegiance is complicated by his belief in “Ambiguous Justice.” He follows Gorosei orders even when uncomfortable with them, but the Buster Call against Storm and the World Government’s conduct leave him conflicted. As a New Marine undercover operative, he ultimately begins supplying intelligence against the same institution he once served without question. 269 321 352 370 444
Abilities & Skills
Glint-Glint Fruit
Kizaru is a Logia user of the Glint-Glint Fruit, allowing him to create, become, and manipulate light. Its extreme mobility makes him one of the fastest fighters on the sea. 131 210
- Can transform into photons to evade conventional physical attacks and reform elsewhere. 131 266
- Can move at light speed by will; Yata no Kagami is used to create a light path for long-distance travel and rapid repositioning. 99 129 210
- Can escape incoming seawater before it completely surrounds him, though direct contact with the sea remains dangerous. 223
- His intangibility fails against Armament Haki and Seastone. 99 132
- Storm’s high-level Conqueror’s Haki can suppress the Fruit’s speed, leaving Kizaru vulnerable to capture. 313
Light-Speed Kick
Kizaru concentrates photon energy into his leg to deliver devastating high-speed kicks.
- His kicks can generate powerful shockwaves and force opponents across large distances. 131
- Heavenly Door releases a high-energy beam from his leg; Kizaru used it to destroy Golden Lion II’s massive airborne “sea island” before it could crush Impel Down. 134
- His kicks can be blocked by sufficiently powerful weapons, Haki, or physical strength. 99 131
Yasakani no Magatama
Kizaru transforms into a cross-shaped light cluster and fires a barrage of tracking golden light bullets.
- The attack can blanket large sections of the battlefield and bombard targets continuously. 131 134
- Individual light bullets possess destructive force comparable to Marine cannon fire. 134
- The technique is ineffective against Logia targets when not infused with Haki, as Edward Teach’s lightning body allowed the shots to pass through harmlessly. 99
- Kizaru has intentionally aimed the barrage around an opponent rather than directly at them, using it as cover or a show of force. 265
Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi
Kizaru can create a shimmering golden sword of light.
- Used for close-quarters combat against sword users and durable constructs. 132 144 266
- Can also be wielded like a firearm to fire continuous Flash Ray beams. 266
- Golden Lion II blocked the blade with the named swords Sakazuki and Karasuma. 132
Light Clones
Kizaru can split his light into multiple independent-looking copies.
- The clones fill the battlefield with blinding golden light and obscure normal vision. 267
- He can voluntarily disperse his body into light to avoid a direct strike, then reform elsewhere. 267
- The clones can be swept away by sufficiently large, Haki-enhanced attacks. 268
Haki and Physical Techniques
Kizaru possesses Observation Haki, Armament Haki, Geppo, and Life Return.
- Uses Observation Haki to detect people and gauge unfamiliar presences over distance. 209 313 330
- Can coat attacks with Armament Haki, including his kicks. 99
- Used Life Return to expand and contract his body, briefly separating himself from Seastone spikes long enough to reactivate his Devil Fruit. 132
- Can use Geppo to remain airborne without relying solely on light movement. 266
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sunglasses — Kizaru’s usual eyewear; he regularly adjusts them when surprised or assessing a situation. 132 235
- Marine Justice coat — Standard Admiral outerwear. 223 385
- Den Den Mushi — Used to report missions, contact Headquarters, and transmit intelligence to the New Marines. 140 269 370
- Eternal Pose to Punk Hazard — Given to Storm during their Devil Fruit retrieval mission. 191
Relationships
- Storm / White Dragon — Initially a fellow Marine and SWORD Unit operative whose identity Kizaru knew; later an enemy during the Buster Call, captor at Punk Hazard, and ultimately his New Marine superior. 269 313 341 444
- Dr. Vegapunk — Longtime close friend dating back decades; Kizaru immediately responded when Vegapunk was endangered and Vegapunk later traded a Devil Fruit to secure Kizaru’s release. 312 314
- Zephyr — Former teacher. Zephyr is frequently harsh and distrustful toward Kizaru, arresting him with Seastone before eventually accepting him into the New Marines. 332 333 341
- Kuzan / Aokiji — Fellow Admiral and former SWORD superior. Kizaru informed Kuzan of Storm’s resignation, while Kuzan later recommended Kizaru as the New Marines’ undercover agent. 269 270 352
- Sakazuki / Akainu — Fellow Admiral and Buster Call partner. Akainu resents Kizaru’s perceived lack of effort, while Kizaru criticizes Akainu after the failed operation. 265 266 272
- Sengoku — Fleet Admiral and superior officer. Kizaru reports major incidents to him and has saved him from drowning following a Thunder Tsunami. 135 136 223
- The Gorosei — Kizaru’s former highest authority. He obeyed their direct orders for years, including the Buster Call and Vegapunk rescue mission, but later covertly passed information to the New Marines. 182 270 312 370
- Edward Teach / Whitebeard the Second — A recurring, dangerous opponent whose Rumble-Rumble Fruit speed and Armament Haki injured Kizaru and repeatedly pressured him at Impel Down. 99 140
- Golden Lion II / Ryan — Opponent at Impel Down whose Seastone trap and mind-reading Observation Haki exposed Kizaru’s overreliance on his Devil Fruit. 131 132 134
Story Role / Major Arcs
Gorosei Crisis and Edward Teach Battle
Kizaru responded to MacGus Saint’s apparent death and fought Edward Teach alongside the Gorosei. Teach’s lightning Logia abilities neutralized Kizaru’s Haki-less light barrage, and Kizaru was injured during their clash. 99
Impel Down Defense
Sent to contain Golden Lion II, Kizaru fought through Infinite Hell and the surrounding sea. Golden Lion II trapped him with Seastone, read his combat thoughts, and escaped; Whitebeard the Second later sent Kizaru into the sea with a single Lightning Kick. 131 132 134
Kizaru remained stationed at Impel Down while recuperating, where Whitebeard the Second repeatedly attacked him over three days. He requested reassignment, but Sengoku refused and sought Storm’s assistance instead. 140
G5 Investigation and Hachinosu Retreat
Kizaru apprehended Vergo after his Donquixote Family ties were exposed, then investigated Hachinosu Island. Faced with Whitebeard the Second, Golden Lion II, Natsu, and Joan, he recognized the overwhelming danger and escaped at maximum speed. 209 210 214
Ruschired Island Buster Call
Kizaru joined Akainu in carrying out the Gorosei’s Buster Call against Storm. He initially held back through inaccurate use of Yasakani no Magatama, was distracted by Storm’s Clay Sengoku construct, and was eventually defeated by Storm’s Clay Nika form. 265 266 267 268
After conceding defeat, Kizaru attempted to persuade Storm not to leave the Marines. Storm rejected him, and Kizaru contacted Kuzan to report the resignation and Akainu’s defeat. 269 270
Punk Hazard and Vegapunk’s Capture
Ordered to rescue Vegapunk, Kizaru rushed to Punk Hazard out of personal concern. Storm’s Conqueror’s Haki suppressed his light-speed movement, allowing Storm to capture him in a Sea Bubble. Vegapunk then obtained Kizaru’s release in exchange for the Mythical Zoan Tanuki Fruit. 312 313 314 315
New Marines and Undercover Role
After leaving Whole Cake Island, Kizaru was arrested by Zephyr and questioned over his apparent treatment as Storm’s prisoner. He later joined the New Marines, though Storm remained suspicious of his loyalty. 321 332 333 341
Zephyr and Kuzan eventually decided that Kizaru should return to the Old Marines as an undercover agent, citing his unmatched escape ability and potential influence among the Marines’ moderates. 352
Intelligence Operations
As an undercover New Marine, Kizaru provided intelligence on the World Government’s plan to ransom Shanks and its deployment of Figarland Garling. He later resumed his Old Marine cover after receiving Storm’s order to remain in place and await further instructions. 370 444
