Background / History
Gilles de Rais sought to resurrect Jeanne d'Arc after witnessing her execution. Because Jeanne's body and ashes had been completely destroyed, the Holy Grail could not grant a true resurrection. Instead, Gilles's wish ultimately produced Jeanne d'Arc (Alter): a False Heroic Spirit shaped from his distorted image of what the betrayed Saint should have become 657 711 806.
Born with implanted memories, vengeance, and hatred toward France, Alter accepted Gilles as her sole trusted confidant. His fanatic devotion reinforced her belief that she was the genuine Jeanne d'Arc and that revenge against the nation that condemned her was justified 710 744 752.
As the Dragon Witch, she kills King Charles VII, massacres Orleans, occupies the city, and wages war across France with Fafnir, dragons, and Mad Enhancement Servants under her command 671 676 690. Her stated solution to France's sins is not reform, but the country's complete destruction and transformation into a lifeless land 689.
Her certainty begins to collapse when Lian Ye questions her about “Letitia,” Jeanne d'Arc's childhood name. Alter has no genuine memories of Domremy Village or of being Letitia, despite sharing Jeanne's appearance and supposed history 697 702. She infiltrates Lian Ye's group in a white Spiritron Dress to investigate her own identity, but overhearing the real Jeanne's perspective leaves her increasingly shaken 753 754 759.
After Gilles's role in her creation is exposed, Alter realizes that her memories, temperament, and purpose may have been imposed on her from birth. The revelation nearly causes her to deny her own existence and disappear as a Servant 806 811 817. However, the scale of her actions as the Dragon Witch causes a reversal of cause and effect: her impact on history establishes her as a new Heroic Spirit capable of being recorded in the Hall of Heroes 821.
Appearance
Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) initially resembles Jeanne d'Arc closely, but presents herself as her opposite through dark armor, a black skirt, and an openly hostile bearing. Following the Spirit Core reforging, her appearance becomes distinctly her own 753 831.
- Initially wears a dark, crude-looking variation of Jeanne d'Arc's battle attire. 824 831
- Uses a black Knight Commander's Sword rather than Jeanne's holy banner as her primary weapon. 742 813
- Has light golden hair; after her Spiritron Dress Upgrade, it grows from shoulder length to nearly hip length. 831
- Her reforged outfit includes ornate black armor over a dark purple, near-black evening dress. 831
- Can disguise herself in pure white armor and clothing to impersonate Jeanne d'Arc. 753 754
Personality
Alter is sharp-tongued, proud, easily angered, and contemptuous of the saintly image associated with Jeanne d'Arc. She rejects mercy as weakness and sees annihilation as a more honest answer to betrayal than forgiveness or political reform 689 742.
Her rage is rooted in insecurity rather than certainty. She fears that she is not the real Jeanne d'Arc, distrusts anyone who challenges Gilles's assurances, and reacts strongly to evidence that she lacks Jeanne's authentic memories 710 752 811. Though she presents herself as a confident “Avenger Witch,” she is emotionally young, having existed for less than a year and possessing even less life experience than the original Jeanne 805 866.
Despite her hostility, Alter is capable of gratitude and attachment. Gilles is her confidant, Fafnir earns her trust more readily than humans, and kindness shown toward her can leave her visibly disarmed even when she responds with sarcasm 710 761 796 838.
Abilities & Skills
Holy Grail Possession
Alter possesses the Holy Grail from the beginning of the conflict, granting her extraordinary magical resources.
- Continuously supplies magical energy, allowing rapid restoration of injuries and damaged Spiritron equipment. 743
- Enables her to summon additional Servants and forcibly grant them the Mad Enhancement attribute. 664 735
- Allows her to issue compulsory orders even to Servants who resist her inhumane commands. 690
- Supports repeated use of her Noble Phantasm at a rate compared to firing it like “fireworks.” 744
Ruler Authority
Before becoming an Avenger, Alter possesses the authorities and knowledge associated with the Ruler class.
- Understands Holy Grail War rules and Servant capabilities at a high level. 750
- Can locate other Servants, facilitating her infiltration of Lian Ye's group. 753
- Commands a large force of Mad Enhancement Servants, though not all obey her with equal willingness. 690 735
Dragon Witch Command
Alter leads dragon forces from Orleans and uses Fafnir as her mount and battlefield platform.
- Commands Fafnir, wyverns, and the broader Dragon Horde. 688 697
- Directs dragons and berserk Servants in coordinated attacks on French cities, including Lyons. 721 766
- Uses Fafnir's back as the ground for her duel with Lian Ye. 741
**Roar! I'M, -angry!**
Alter's Noble Phantasm is a wide-area flame attack driven by wrath.
- Produces an indiscriminate area-of-effect assault capable of threatening allies and enemies alike. 738
- Converts hostile magical energy into fuel. 738
- Forces opposing forces apart and disrupts both sides' actions across the battlefield. 738
- Its output is judged to be EX-rank due to Alter's nature as an inversion of Catholic sainthood. 738
Swordsmanship
Alter fights directly with a one-handed Knight Commander's Sword, favoring aggressive close-range combat.
- Duels Lian Ye atop Fafnir while wielding her sword against his halberd. 741 742
- Avoids a near-decapitating strike from Lian Ye's transformed weapon. 742
- Makes a final solo stand with her sword after losing faith in the purpose of her own existence. 813
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Holy Grail — Source of her immense magical power, healing, Servant summoning, and Mad Enhancement control. 743
- Black Knight Commander's Sword — Her primary close-combat weapon. 741 813
- Evil Dragon Legion War Banner — Used in her formal duel against Lian Ye. 741
- Dark Spiritron Dress — Her original black-and-gray battle attire as the Dragon Witch. 753 824
- Reforged Spiritron Dress — Ornate black armor and dark purple dress gained alongside her Avenger-class transformation. 831
Relationships
- Gilles de Rais (Caster) — Her creator, adviser, and most fanatical supporter. He convinces her that she is the true Jeanne d'Arc while concealing that she was created by his Holy Grail wish. 710 744 806
- Fafnir — Her Evil Dragon mount and a loyal subordinate. Alter trusts Fafnir more readily than humans, while Fafnir remains protective of her despite her harsh manner. 699 761 798
- Jeanne d'Arc (Ruler) — Her saintly counterpart and ideological opposite. Alter considers her an incomplete relic who refuses to acknowledge hatred, while Jeanne views Alter as a false creation rather than her own dark side. 689 737 804
- Jeanne d'Arc (Lily) — A child form associated with Letitia and Domremy Village. Lily openly rejects becoming the Dragon Witch, intensifying Alter's doubts over her own identity. 737 742
- Lian Ye — Initially her enemy and duel opponent. His investigation into her missing memories and origin forces her to confront the truth; he later becomes her Master and helps restore her Spirit Core. 697 741 817 837
- Leonardo da Vinci — Performs the Servant observation and Spiritron Dress Upgrade that remakes Alter as an Avenger. 830 831
Story Role / Major Arcs
Dragon Witch of France
Alter leads the destruction of France from Orleans, using the Holy Grail to summon Mad Enhancement Servants and unleashing dragons upon the country. She frames France's eradication as her way of saving it from hatred and sin 664 689 721.
Conflict with the Other Jeannes
Her confrontation with Jeanne d'Arc exposes the vast difference between their ideals: Jeanne accepts her tragic life without resentment, while Alter treats vengeance as the only meaningful response to betrayal. The appearance of Jeanne Lily and the question of Letitia's memories further destabilize Alter's belief that she is genuine 697 737 758.
Revelation of the Forged Witch
Lian Ye deduces that Alter's lack of childhood memories and radically different disposition mean she is not a natural alternate form of Jeanne. Gilles eventually confirms that she was produced by his wish to the Holy Grail, not resurrected from Jeanne herself 743 806.
Establishment and Reforging
After learning the truth, Alter nearly loses the will sustaining her Servant existence. Her destruction across France nevertheless creates the historical “effect” needed for her to become a recordable Heroic Spirit. Da Vinci and Lian Ye then reforge her Spirit Core, transforming her from a Ruler into an Avenger with a new body and appearance 817 821 830 831.

“That’s why I’m a transformed and grown Jeanne! Don’t compare me to those brats from before or that Saint who hasn’t grown at all, okay? It’s beneath me!” 742
