Background / History
Childhood and concealed heritage
Murong Xiao was raised by his grandfather, Murong Hai. Scale-like markings made him a target for other children, but he refused to fight back because the sight of blood stirred an inner hunger he feared he could not control. He adopted vegetarianism as part of suppressing his Cry Dragon instincts. 19
His grandfather concealed the truth of his half-demon heritage by spreading the story that he bore Water Qilin bloodline. The resulting “Qilin Child” reputation made him Purple Sun Prefecture’s foremost genius of his generation, despite the false origin of the title. 5 19
At the Clear Abyss Sect entrance ceremony, Murong Xiao’s talent was assessed as lower first class. He later provoked competition among three elders before becoming Elder Han He’s disciple. 5 8
Divine Blade Cave incident
While cultivating on the second level of Divine Blade Cave, Murong Xiao was overwhelmed by soldier-killing intent. His suppressed demonic nature began to emerge, with scales nearly covering his face and his temperament nearing a dangerous change. 18 19
Li Mo saved him with a Six-Pattern Clear Heart Pill. Murong Xiao revealed his heritage, begged Li Mo to protect the secret, and received an entire bottle of the valuable pills for continued suppression. He then tried to stop Li Mo from entering the cave’s third level, unwilling to let his rescuer face danger alone. 19
Growth in the Clear Abyss Sect
Bloodline nightmares later drove Murong Xiao to seek a mental cultivation method. Li Mo gave him the Golden Bell Shield, an investment that helped him begin breaking free from the restraints imposed by his bloodline. 48 52
Murong Xiao’s half-demon physique and body-tempering foundation let him defeat opponents above his cultivation level. During the Nine Peaks Martial Tournament, he won his match overwhelmingly and drew the attention of elders and outside martial artists. 73 75
Southern Border and Hanging Temple
Murong Xiao was captured in Yun Province by the Southern Border rebel general Chang Bolong, prompting Li Mo to organize a search using Drizzle Pavilion trackers. 237
After his Cry Dragon bloodline awakened and left him in slumber, the Hanging Temple monk Heng Yuan used Buddhist methods to suppress and stabilize it. Murong Xiao subsequently travelled with Li Mo to the Southern Border, reunited with his parents Murong Feng and Wu Qing, and learned more about the Cry Dragon Clan. 245 247 258 263
At Hanging Temple, he chose to become Heng Yuan’s disciple while retaining the option of eventually returning to secular life. His Cry Dragon bloodline later became purer under the Heavenly Jade’s radiance. 268 283
Appearance
Murong Xiao initially appears as a refined young true disciple in white cloud-patterned robes and a purple-gold crown. His mixed heritage is visible through the faint scale-like markings around his neck; when his bloodline is active, horns and additional scales emerge. 18 19 528
- White cloud-patterned true-disciple robes and a purple-gold crown during his time at Clear Abyss Sect 18
- Delicate features, often strained when resisting killing intent 18
- Scale-like markings around the neck and face 18 528
- A pale-gold body and tranquil bearing associated with Buddhist martial arts 73
- Shaved head after adopting Buddhist cultivation practices 245 489
- Wears a Pearl White Lotus Silk cap in the Southern Border; its material repels moisture 256
Personality
Murong Xiao is fundamentally kind-hearted and compassionate, even though he fears the violent instincts inherited through his Cry Dragon bloodline. His early refusal to retaliate against bullies, vegetarian habits, scripture recitation, and later charity all stem from his determination not to harm others. 19 249 250
He is sincere, humble, and often awkwardly earnest around Li Mo. After being saved in Divine Blade Cave, he immediately entrusted Li Mo with his greatest secret and came to regard him as an elder brother. 19 52
His Buddhist path has not erased his humor or curiosity. He can be comically literal, unusually enthusiastic about “Buddhist practice,” and easily embarrassed when Li Mo teases him. 147 246 286
