Background / History

Toji was born into the Zenin Clan with a Heavenly Restriction that completely eliminated his cursed energy in exchange for extraordinary physical abilities. The clan regarded his lack of cursed energy as a disgrace. He suffered discrimination and brutal abuse from childhood, including being thrown among cursed spirits 22 79.

He eventually left the Zenin Clan and married into the Fushiguro Family. His relationship with his former clan became openly hostile, and Mitsuki later identified his history of slaughtering relatives as an obstacle to considering him for the Zenin patriarch position 51 79.

Before accepting the assassination of Riko Amanai, Toji had encountered Satoru Gojo as a child. Gojo was the only person who had ever noticed Toji standing behind him, convincing Toji that a direct confrontation with the Six Eyes bearer would be dangerous 22.

Appearance

  • Hair: Black 22.
  • Distinguishing mark: A scar at the corner of his mouth 22.
  • Companion: During combat, he carries the Inventory Curse Worm—a caterpillar-like cursed spirit with a baby’s face—on his shoulder 23.

Personality

Toji is cold, ruthless, and openly contemptuous of jujutsu sorcerers. He mocks the prestigious “geniuses” opposing him and shows no remorse after apparently killing Gojo. His confidence is backed by careful preparation: rather than challenging Gojo immediately, he uses a bounty to exhaust his vigilance before striking 22 23 24.

Although he claims to have abandoned his pride to survive, humiliation still provokes him. After Mitsuki heals and repeatedly defeats him, Toji angrily objects to being used as a punching bag. He nevertheless recognizes overwhelming strength and ultimately chooses compromise over a fight he cannot win 25 26 27.

His apparent indifference toward his children conceals genuine attachment. Near death, his foremost concern is his son rather than his hatred of the Zenin Clan. After accepting Mitsuki’s proposal, he wants to survive to watch both children grow up. Later, he seeks a suitable teacher for Megumi and takes pride in the possibility that his son could eventually match his strength 25 27 82.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Restriction

Toji has possessed absolutely no cursed energy since birth, receiving an exceptionally powerful body, athletic ability, and heightened senses in exchange 22.

  • Speed and mobility: Evades Gojo’s Blue and moves quickly enough to repeatedly seek openings between counterattacks 23.
  • Physical resilience: Survives grievous injuries long enough for Mitsuki to heal him, though True Thousand Needles and Black Flash overwhelm his defenses 24 25.
  • Cursed-spirit detection: Uses touch, smell, and hearing to detect cursed spirits without relying on sight 22.
  • Limits: Cannot harm cursed spirits without a cursed tool or perform Black Flash, which requires cursed energy 22 26.

Stealth and Assassination

Toji combines his lack of cursed energy with precise timing and indirect preparation 22 23.

  • Posts a dark-web bounty on Riko to wear down her protectors before making his own attempt 22.
  • Ambushes Gojo inside Tengen’s barrier when the escort group believes it has reached safety 22.
  • His absence of cursed-energy flow prevents Gojo’s Six Eyes from accurately predicting his movements during their fight 23.
  • Releases swarms of weak cursed spirits to obscure his approach and conceal an attack 23 24.

Close-Quarters Combat and Weapon Handling

Toji is an accomplished hand-to-hand fighter who targets vital areas and uses cursed tools to overcome sorcerers’ defenses. He fights Mitsuki evenly at close range before Mitsuki escalates to wide-area Blood Manipulation 23 24.

  • Dual-wields the Inverted Spear of Heaven and Soul Liberation Blade against Mitsuki 24.
  • Uses the Inverted Spear of Heaven to bypass Gojo’s Limitless and inflict lethal wounds 23.
  • Adapts his approach when a direct exchange fails, creating distance and attempting another concealed attack 24.

Vulnerability to Mitsuki’s Blood Curse

Mitsuki places a curse on Toji after healing him. Activating Infinite Blood Devouring briefly makes Toji feel that his blood is about to surge out of control; Mitsuki warns that the curse can be used if Toji acts against him 26.

  • The curse ordinarily has no noticeable effect 26.
  • During Megumi’s visit, Toji finds himself unable to move when Mitsuki attacks his son. Toji does not know how Mitsuki immobilized him 82.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Inverted Spear of Heaven — A special-grade, forked, jitte-shaped cursed tool capable of nullifying any cursed technique. Toji uses it against Gojo and Mitsuki; Mitsuki confiscates it as spoils of war 23 24 26.
  • Soul Liberation Blade — Wielded in Toji’s right hand while the Inverted Spear of Heaven occupies his left during his duel with Mitsuki 24.
  • Short blade — Used for the initial surprise stabbing through Gojo’s chest 22 23.
  • Inventory Curse Worm — His accompanying cursed spirit, from which he releases low-grade spirits to conceal attacks. He retrieves it before leaving Mitsuki 23 24 26.
  • False Riko Amanai body — Created by Mitsuki and handed to Toji so he can turn it in for the assassination bounty without killing the real Riko 27 43.

Relationships

  • Kamo Mitsuki — Former opponent turned ally under coercive terms. Mitsuki spares him partly because of his concern for his children, while Toji comes to regard Mitsuki as a suitable prospective teacher for Megumi 26 27 82.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Son and inheritor of the Ten Shadows Technique. Toji initially describes a future arrangement to sell him to the Zenin Clan, but later refuses the clan’s request and seeks Mitsuki’s instruction instead 25 78 82.
  • Tsumiki Fushiguro — Daughter. Toji praises her gentle, obedient nature and compares her favorably with Megumi’s stubbornness 82.
  • Satoru Gojo — Opponent whose Six Eyes prompted Toji to prepare an elaborate ambush. Toji believes he has killed him, then learns that Gojo survived and became stronger 22 23 26.
  • Riko Amanai — Assassination target. Toji abandons the attempt against the real Riko after reaching an agreement with Mitsuki 22 27.
  • Naobito Zenin — Patriarch of Toji’s former clan. After Toji refuses to send Megumi back, Naobito considers reconciling with him to obtain his help with Mahoraga 78 79.
  • Yuki Tsukumo — Researcher interested in his complete absence of cursed energy. An earlier investigation ends when Toji notices her scrutiny and the trail goes cold 32.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Star Plasma Vessel Assassination

Hired by the Time Vessel Association to kill Riko, Toji first exhausts Gojo through other bounty hunters. He then strikes inside the Tombs of the Star Corridor. His opening stab fails to hit Gojo’s organs, and Geto escorts Riko away while Gojo remains to fight 22.

Toji escapes Geto’s worm-shaped cursed spirit and conceals his approach behind a swarm of fly heads. Using the Inverted Spear of Heaven, he penetrates Limitless and leaves Gojo apparently dead before pursuing Riko into the underground passage 23.

Defeat and Recruitment

Mitsuki blocks Toji’s pursuit. Their close-range duel is initially even, but Toji’s attempt to conceal himself among cursed spirits fails against True Thousand Needles, which destroys the swarm and leaves him bleeding heavily 24 25.

Mitsuki then lands three Black Flashes, repeatedly healing Toji rather than allowing him to die. After demanding his help in rebuilding Jujutsu Society, Mitsuki confiscates his strongest tool, demonstrates a blood curse, and threatens to turn his body into a puppet if he refuses. Toji ultimately agrees to live for his children and leaves carrying the false Riko body 25 26 27.

Later Work and Megumi’s Education

After recruitment, Mitsuki gives Toji no major assignment beyond watching for information about Sukuna’s Fingers during his usual missions. Toji later brings Megumi to Mitsuki’s residence and asks him to teach the Ten Shadows Technique 82.

Megumi insults Mitsuki, who draws his blood and knocks him unconscious. Unable to intervene, Toji takes his son home, tells him to respect Mitsuki, and warns him not to assume Mahoraga is invincible 82.

Influence on Jujutsu Research

  • Eliminating cursed energy: Yuki initially treats Toji as her only known example of a person with none. Learning that his child is still a sorcerer leads her to abandon that approach and support teaching humanity to control cursed energy instead 32 34.
  • Taming Mahoraga: Mitsuki proposes that Toji’s purely physical Heavenly Restriction could counter Mahoraga’s adaptation to cursed techniques. This remains a proposed method in the supplied chapters, not a demonstrated victory 78 79.
  • Technique nullification: Mitsuki uses the confiscated Inverted Spear of Heaven to imprint its nullifying ability into his own blood, enabling Blood Manipulation to penetrate Limitless 75.
