Background / History
Mentoring the Divine Child
Masaki was already the Kamo Clan’s Patriarch when his three-year-old nephew, Kamo Mitsuki, awakened Blood Manipulation. He named Mitsuki the clan’s Divine Child, opened its technique records to him without restriction, and personally took charge of his training. The emergence of Satoru Gojo’s Six Eyes placed pressure on the Kamo Clan to cultivate a comparable talent 1 2.
Over the next three years, Masaki taught Mitsuki close combat and practical fighting skills. By age six, Mitsuki could match some clan elders in hand-to-hand combat, and their sparring sessions increasingly strained Masaki’s ability to keep up. Unaware that Mitsuki could create blood from cursed energy, Masaki repeatedly warned him against blood loss and urged him to prioritize close combat 2.
The Three Great Families’ Banquet
Masaki accompanied Mitsuki to the banquet on the Zenin Clan’s private island. He reassured him that losing to Gojo’s exceptional talent would be understandable, but insisted that he defeat opponents from the other clans. Masaki regarded both the gathering and the recent assassination attempts against the Divine Children as tests of their clans’ strength 4.
Mitsuki’s performance against Gojo surprised him. Although Masaki maintained his composure before the other patriarchs, he had originally bestowed the Divine Child title partly to bolster the clan’s prestige and had not anticipated such overwhelming ability 5.
Entrusting the Black Box
After the banquet, Masaki questioned Mitsuki about his unusual Blood Manipulation. When Mitsuki admitted that Cursed Technique Lapse allowed him to convert cursed energy into blood, Masaki excitedly retrieved a sealed black box known only to the clan’s patriarchs 7.
He explained that successive patriarchs inherited the box and deposited sorcerers’ blood onto its crimson eye. Believing Mitsuki’s blood-creation ability could unlock its secret, he instructed him to open it privately and conceal its contents. The box subsequently transformed Mitsuki’s Blood Manipulation 8.
Masaki worried about Mitsuki throughout the month he spent in the secret chamber. Seeing him emerge unharmed and substantially stronger brought relief and satisfaction. Mitsuki returned the heirloom to Masaki’s custody before leaving to adapt to his new abilities 9.
The Refused Succession
As Mitsuki’s knowledge outgrew his own, Masaki began avoiding him because he could no longer answer his training questions. By Mitsuki’s graduation, their contact had diminished considerably, although Masaki still knew him better than the other elders did 52.
Recognizing that Mitsuki’s Special Grade strength allowed him to reject the council’s decisions, Masaki proposed appointing him acting Patriarch before withdrawing completely. When Mitsuki arrived, Masaki sincerely offered him the full position, accepting that a younger, stronger successor would better serve the clan 52 53.
Mitsuki refused. Masaki initially felt that the refusal devalued his life’s work, then acknowledged that expecting an eventual handover had weakened his own commitment. He resolved to devote himself anew to the clan and prepare his son as its future Patriarch 54.
Bloodline Resonance and Continued Leadership
At Mitsuki’s request, Masaki ordered every main- and branch-family member to return, regardless of their current assignment. More than a thousand gathered for Mitsuki’s Bloodline Resonance, which strengthened their cursed energy, techniques, and potential. Afterward, Masaki agreed to remain Patriarch and promised the clan’s support whenever Mitsuki needed it 54 55.
He dismissed the gathering so members could test their improvements privately. Following the crowd’s disorderly departure, he ordered Kamo Aoo to pay personally for repairs to the plaza and a statue of Mitsuki 56.
Masaki later publicly endorsed Mitsuki’s proposed Japan-wide super barrier on behalf of the Kamo Clan. The clan’s fortunes were tied to Mitsuki’s, leaving Masaki obliged to support him in that setting regardless of any private reservations 110.
Appearance
Masaki is broadly built, with black hair and a composed bearing. His stern features and steady posture convey the authority of a clan patriarch 2 51.
- Training attire: Clean, neat black training clothes; an intense sparring session leaves only a light sheen of sweat on his forehead 2.
- Formal attire: Dark traditional robes worn while presiding over the clan council 51.
- Voice: Deep, forceful, and steady 7 51.
Personality
Masaki places the Kamo Clan’s interests above personal preference. Naming Mitsuki his prospective successor disrupted his own household, but he maintained the decision because of Mitsuki’s extraordinary talent. His eventual offer to relinquish leadership was sincere rather than merely an attempt to appease a stronger sorcerer 53 54.
As a teacher, he is encouraging and protective. He praises Mitsuki’s progress, cautions him against sacrificing his health to training, and insists on balancing exertion with rest. His concern during Mitsuki’s month-long transformation shows that his investment extends beyond the boy’s value to the clan 2 3 9.
His pride makes it difficult to acknowledge his limitations: he avoids Mitsuki rather than repeatedly admit that he cannot answer his questions. Nevertheless, he can reflect critically on his own conduct and change direction, as demonstrated by his renewed commitment after Mitsuki refuses succession 52 54.
