Background / History

Karl was born in the Sveek Region of the Kingdom of Gondo and lived in Signo City’s southern district. His grandfather earned the Bergman family’s baronial title through military service under Marquis Lawrence; it passed to Karl’s father. The family’s inherited Gale Swordplay formed the basis of Karl’s early combat training. 1 2

A fire killed Karl’s father, left Karl with burns and mental shock, and was followed by the replacement of his soul by a transmigrator’s. He initially sought to inherit the barony, but Father Vic refused the transfer because Karl’s father had not made church offerings despite paying tithes. Karl was ordered to raise thirty Gold Coins. 1

While attempting to solve this financial crisis, Karl discovered a stone seat suspended amid endless stars. Within this mysterious realm, his emotions are suppressed by absolute rationality and his physical control improves. The realm also allows him to travel to another world, including Black City. 2

Karl ultimately completed the Church’s required displays of piety and received the title of Baron. His status later rose further, with Karl obtaining a Count’s rank through acquired and purchased military merits. 7 263

Appearance

Karl is a sturdy, formerly handsome man whose severe burn scar makes his face appear intimidating.

  • Black, slightly naturally curled hair, worn past his shoulders. 1 67
  • Brown eyes. 1
  • Severe burn scar on his left cheek, received in the fire that killed his father. 1
  • Typically wears tailored formalwear, trench coats, leather boots, and carries a concealed sword cane. 1 67
  • Uses disguises when conducting covert trade, including altered appearance, aura, and mental fluctuations. 152

Personality

Karl is practical, ambitious, and intensely focused on improving his strength. Early financial pressure drives him to consider extreme measures, while Black City teaches him to prioritize secrecy and survival. 2 40

He is calculating in battle and research, frequently studying enemies’ bodies, memories, equipment, and spell patterns for useful knowledge. He is also capable of decisive brutality: he kills Gar after the merchant breaks their agreement, eliminates Charles in his home, and absorbs enemies’ souls through the Divine Domain Fragment to obtain their Sorcery knowledge. 29 87 88 183

Despite this ruthlessness, Karl protects people he considers his own. He supports Aya’s team in Black City, helps refugees during Black City’s collapse, saves Amy from danger, and rewards the Blood Wolf after it proves useful. 34 65 106 305
