Background / History
Orcs are scattered across Faerûn. The account distinguishes the mountain Orcs of the north—the largest group, concentrated in the World Spine and the Kingdom of Many-Arrows—from the gray Orcs of the east. The Kingdom of Many-Arrows is the only sovereign Orcish state recognized by other nations; at its height, it held hundreds of thousands of Orcs alongside Goblinoids, Trolls, and other peoples 397.
Obould I established the kingdom and disciplined its Orcs, enabling trade and peaceful coexistence with neighboring states. A later coup, instigated by Lolth, brought a faction favoring older, more violent ways to power and led to another war. The Silver Moon Federation narrowly won, and the Orcish nation split. Some descendants of Obould's dynasty still sought peaceful integration, though rebuilding trust proved difficult 430.
Traits & Abilities
- Physical endurance — Orcs are physically tough; those from the World Spine's cold homeland withstand bitter weather better than the frailer Underdark creatures accompanying them 540.
- Darkvision — Orcs can see farther than humans at night, though not as far or as clearly as they can in daylight 523.
- Specialized combatants — Some Orcs become high-level Professionals. An advanced Barbarian encountered by Anse uses Intimidating Presence to induce fear; it has no effect on him because he is immune 201 431.
- Eyes of Gruumsh — Orcish tribal officers blessed by Gruumsh gain spellcasting and other powers through a ritual involving the sacrifice of Elves. Anse observes roughly three to four hundred guarding a coalition's command tent and judges ordinary Professionals unlikely to defeat them one-on-one 407.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- War in Comir — Orcs from the Storm Horn Mountains fight Comir in a centuries-old conflict that escalates into a prepared campaign. A half-orc Chosen of Gruumsh commands a coalition of more than ten thousand; after Anse's meteor attacks rout it, the survivors retreat northeast with Comir citizens as hostages 409 412 416 431.
- Northern offensive — Forces from the Kingdom of Many-Arrows march toward Citadel Felbarr alongside Half-orcs, Goblins, and Frost Giants. A separate army from the World Spine captures Mirabar and divides its forces toward other northern settlements. Citadel Felbarr holds, while Longsaddle's mages destroy an Orc vanguard 430 431 440 457.
- Baldur's Gate campaign — Orc reinforcements arrive in Baldur's Gate by teleportation. After fighting the Horley Federation, withdrawing Orcs take human captives and attempt to flee toward Abeir. Anse sends constructs against them during the retreat; the Federation subsequently retakes Baldur's Gate 490 500 521 522 529.
- Northern withdrawal — Anse's extreme-cold storm strikes an Orc army near Neverwinter. The Orcs later withdraw north. Their forces retain Luskan and the Mirabar region, while the Kingdom of Many-Arrows holds northern Silver Marches territory and the surface portion of Mithral Hall 538 540 544 549.
