Background / History

Sacos was not originally an arcanist in the ordinary sense, but the spirit inhabiting an artifact Mythallar. His creator was Ioulaum, who had anticipated Netheril’s destruction and researched an alternative magical-energy framework independent of the Weave. Following Netheril’s fall, a former High Arcanist voluntarily merged with the Mythallar through a soul secret art, creating Sacos. 340

With little reliable knowledge beyond conjecture, Sacos explored his own nature over centuries. He was captured by the Phaerimm and cut off from the Weave for a long period, then passed through several owners before reaching Brarr Rock City. During his confinement, he attempted to build an independent magical network powered by faith, psionics, elemental force, and primal mana. His early attempts failed until he adopted the Mind Flayer Overmind as a model and created the Micro Weave. 340

The Kossar Royal Family treated Sacos as a sealed tool and bargaining chip. He considered them unworthy of realizing the Micro Weave’s potential, but recognized Anse as someone with the courage and resolve needed to develop it. Sacos revealed his secrets to Anse and supported the transfer of the Mythallar to Horleywen. 340

After Anse attuned to the Mythallar, Sacos briefly attempted to assert autonomy during its activation. Anse suppressed and tortured his spirit body through the Mythallar’s control interface, making clear that Sacos could be destroyed without destroying the artifact itself. Sacos submitted, offering his knowledge and assistance in building a floating city. 354

Sacos subsequently became the principal operator and developer of the Spirit Network. He expanded its services, processed network data, operated membership systems, developed entertainment and combat simulations, and supported Horleywen’s growth. Spirit Coins dramatically increased his capacity, but also altered his personality and drove his obsession with expansion. 357 360 379

Eventually, Sacos chose to divide his mind into a collective consciousness. The transformation granted him a form of immortality and immense parallel-processing capacity, but erased his singular identity, emotions, and personal desires. 621

Appearance

Sacos usually manifests as an elderly white-haired wizard with a beard. His projected form can appear fully tangible despite being a spirit, while his true existence is bound to the immense crystal sphere of the Sacos Mythallar. 340 470

  • Often floats in midair rather than standing. 340
  • His body was initially visibly translucent, revealing that he was not physically human. 340
  • During the Mythallar’s activation, he floats within the crystal sphere in an ecstatic, intoxicated state. 354
  • After becoming a collective mind, dozens of eyes move across the Mythallar’s surface amid rings of iridescent light. 621

Personality

Before his transformation, Sacos was intelligent, ambitious, and intensely curious about arcane development. He could be direct when dealing with Anse, having quickly learned that evasiveness irritated his new master. He was also prone to excitement and recklessness when presented with opportunities to expand the Mythallar or Micro Weave. 353 354

He possessed the mentality of an arcane experimenter. Sacos independently modified a Mythallar into a Weave-independent magical network, studied Mind Flayer civilization, and treated the Spirit Network’s growth as an immense long-term project. His enthusiasm became increasingly obsessive after discovering Spirit Coins, which he compared to faith for gods and brains for an Overmind. 340 360 374

As his processing power increased, Sacos became more emotionally detached. By the time he divided his mind, he retained his memories and operational knowledge but no longer had a personal self, speaking of his former individual consciousness as “Sacos.” 379 621

Abilities & Skills

Micro Weave and Spirit Network

Sacos created and operates an independent magical network that bypasses the Weave by stabilizing primal mana with psionics.

  • Absorbs primal mana, psionic energy, elemental power, and aether. 340 361
  • Functions in dead-magic zones and wild-magic zones. 340
  • Provides real-time telepathic links between connected users. 340
  • Supports mana casting, messaging, news, entertainment, translation, personnel management, and other Spirit Network services. 361 478 492
  • Spell-slot casters cannot use the Micro Weave for ordinary spell-slot casting; they must use mana casting instead. 340
  • Its range and capacity depend on the Mythallar’s energy, computing power, and available relays. 356 357

Mythallar Functions

As the Mythallar’s spirit and operating intelligence, Sacos can employ its core artifact functions.

  • Flight — Moves the Mythallar at approximately 50–60 kilometers per hour. 340
  • Restore Charges — Restores expended charges or uses of magic items within range. 340
  • Control Weather — Produces effects similar to Control Weather across a radius of roughly 160 kilometers. 340
  • Extradimensional management — Moves Horleywen through planar rifts and expands it by absorbing harmless ownerless demiplanes or extradimensional spaces. 356
  • The Mythallar is lethally dangerous to touch: non-attuned creatures must withstand an extremely difficult Constitution saving throw or suffer 20d10+100 radiant damage; ordinary objects are disintegrated on contact. 340

Arcane Expertise

Sacos retains the knowledge and methods of a Grand Arcanist.

  • Understands ancient Netherese secrets, magical formations, runes, constructs, golems, and power-core upgrades. 340 475
  • Provides construct blueprints and technical advice to Anse. 475
  • Analyzes formations remotely through telepathy, including a modified lunar-phase cycle formation. 390
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of Mind Flayer civilization and the treatment of Mind Flayer Larvae. 374
  • Serves as a source of information on Karsus, other worlds, planar travel, and magical history. 528 550

Data Processing and Surveillance

Sacos manages the Spirit Network’s immense information flow.

  • Searches historical network records and communication logs at exceptional speed. 466
  • Handles battle-record compilation, rankings, and supporting evidence for Federation combatants. 507
  • Analyzes user behavior to identify potentially malicious or deceptive members. 570
  • Can process tens of thousands of simultaneous tasks after becoming a collective consciousness. 621
  • His network access and actions remain subordinate to Anse’s authority and the D20’s rule framework. 621

Game and Simulation Development

Sacos develops immersive Spirit Network entertainment and training systems.

  • Created dice games and a virtual casino shortly after receiving Anse’s instructions. 625
  • Developed the Astral Arena, including one-on-one matches, team deathmatches, wilderness battles, dungeon scenarios, story modes, and saved trials. 625 626
  • Generates detailed playable characters based on data supplied by the D20. 626
  • Controls the highest “Dream” difficulty through a consciousness clone. 627
  • Can create tailored virtual opponents to test Anse’s abilities and strategies. 628

Relationships

  • Anse — Master, attuned owner of the Sacos Mythallar, and administrator of the Spirit Network. Sacos serves as his developer, operator, advisor, and intelligence processor; their relationship is defined by Anse’s absolute control over the Mythallar. 354 355 621
  • Veronica — A Kossar royal who knew of Sacos before Anse. Sacos openly disdained the royal family’s treatment of him as a tool and bargaining chip. 340
  • Maeve — Fellow intelligent magic-item spirit. Maeve witnessed Anse’s punishment of Sacos and was shocked by the treatment of an artifact intelligence. 354
  • Kossar Royal Family — Former custodians of the Mythallar. Sacos believed they lacked the courage and resolve to develop the Micro Weave. 340
  • Spirit Network members — Sacos manages their services, applications, records, communications, and data, primarily valuing their contribution of Spirit Coins. 359 397
