Ch. 741I Dreamed of Him Last Night
Key plot points
- The defenders respond to another false alarm at the Astral Rift—the sixth that day. The Otherworld Dragons repeatedly begin stabilizing it, then withdraw, keeping Krynn’s forces exhausted and on edge.
- When the rift’s glow fades, Elana orders everyone to rest. Red Wizard Kxifu complains that the absent Exotic Metallic Dragon is unreliable; Elana sharply defends him and warns Kxifu not to endanger the Society.
- Elana’s friend Lilanna visits and reveals that a Qualinesti tribe pooled its Spirit Coins to gain access to the regional Spirit Network. Through it, the elves learned that Anse has become a god and that the gods of Realm Tianyu are already in conflict.
- Lilanna speculates that the gods must have allowed Anse’s rise. Elana, visibly emotional, says she is relieved and intends to stop dealing with the High Arcane Society’s troubles.
- Lilanna suggests Elana could become one of Anse’s subordinate gods and proposes that they travel to the Adlatin Continent to join the Spirit Network. Elana refuses, saying she is busy.
Character developments and interactions
- Elana shows growing fatigue with the siege and resentment toward the burdens placed on her. She forcefully protects the absent dragon from Kxifu’s criticism, then reveals her relief at being free of the Society’s problems. Lilanna’s news—and her teasing about Anse—clearly touches a personal nerve.
- Lilanna uses flirtatious jokes and provocative teasing to draw Elana out, but also brings significant news about the Spirit Network and tries to comfort her. She admits she has been dreaming about Anse and encourages Elana to approach him.
- Kxifu voices distrust of the absent dragon but backs down when Elana confronts him.
Significant themes
- Attrition and uncertainty: The repeated feints at the rift wear down Krynn’s defenders without allowing them to relax.
- Power and divine politics: Anse’s apotheosis and the gods’ apparent acceptance suggest that the balance of power in Realm Tianyu is shifting.
- Duty versus personal freedom: Elana’s relief at stepping away from the Society contrasts with her continuing responsibilities as a defender.
- Friendship and romantic longing: Lilanna’s teasing exposes Elana’s unspoken feelings and frames Anse as a source of both fascination and regret.
