Background / History

Garp joined the Marines at age seventeen rather than sailing as a pirate. He rose from an East Blue branch to Marine Headquarters and became one of the organization’s defining figures. His victories over Rocks and the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, earned him the title “Hero of the Marines.” 6 135

As a Vice Admiral, Garp commanded the Doghead Warship and held enough accumulated military merit and influence to openly insult Celestial Dragons without consequence. His personal charisma also drew an unofficial neutral bloc of unruly Marines known as the Garp Faction. 6 60 85

During a Grand Line mission in Marineford Era 1514, Garp anticipated Ron’s fall from the sky and brought him aboard his ship. He attempted to recruit Ron, then took responsibility for his development after Ron joined the Marines. He confronted Ron directly, regarding him as another grandson who had chosen a destructive path. In their final battle, Garp pushed Life Return beyond its limits but was ultimately defeated inside Ron’s Black Prison Thunder Realm. 803 808 810

The public account stated that the Golden Emperor engineered Garp’s death while Garp protected more than 106,000 slaves in the Golden City. His funeral at Marine Headquarters was attended by the Marine leadership. 814 815

Garp was an elderly but exceptionally broad and muscular man with gray-white hair and beard, a naturally imposing face, and a body that remained powerful even in old age. 6
