Background
Dragon was the son of Marine hero Garp and was groomed as a future Admiral. Intelligent, capable, and notably unarrogant, he rose to Marine Headquarters Vice Admiral in his early twenties and earned Sengoku’s trust before ultimately betraying the Marines. 74
He left the Marines after the destruction of Ohara and founded the Revolutionary Army to oppose the World Government and the Celestial Dragons. The Government erased records of his Marine past, leaving him effectively a “free prisoner” outside official history. 499
Dragon built the Revolutionary Army into a far-reaching organization through intelligence networks, liberation movements, and covert identities such as a “Morning Star” trading-company merchant in Baltigo. 453 500
Appearance
Dragon is a tall, upright man with a resolute bearing rather than an imposing build. When he intervened on Whitebeard Island, he wore a cloak over a plain dark-purple long-sleeved shirt. 367 368
- Diamond-shaped tattoos cover the left side of his face. 367
- His expression remains composed even under extreme pressure, though he becomes visibly grim in battle. 367 506
- He later conceals himself beneath a black robe while attending a Holy Land meeting. 939
Personality
Dragon is driven by freedom and the elimination of oppression, not personal power. He would rather see the Revolutionary Army disband than manufacture conflict merely to justify its own continued existence. 613
He is calculating and cautious in command. During the Marine assault on Baldigo, he immediately ordered evacuation rather than a futile counterattack, prioritizing the survival of personnel over holding territory. 503
Dragon is also deeply self-sacrificing. He refused an opportunity to escape capture because he believed his death would be more useful to the Revolutionary Army than his life, and he later endured imprisonment without betraying his comrades. 510 611
Abilities & Skills
Hurricane-Hurricane Fruit
Dragon commands air currents and hurricanes, using the omnipresent atmosphere as both a weapon and a means of spatial control. His wind can intercept explosive force, form cutting attacks, and move him across vast distances. 367 368
- Crushing Hurricane — Fires a massive hurricane capable of matching Ron’s Thundercloud Kirin or splitting an airship apart with wind pressure and wind blades. 368 504
- Wind Dragon — Shapes a hurricane into a dragon-like form to block and redirect an explosion. 367
- Hurricane Greatsword — Forms a giant blade from compressed air currents; its cutting force shreds clouds, debris, and steel. 368
- Airflow functions as an extension of his perception, allowing him to sense attacks before they fully manifest. 368
- His control over wind lets him create temporary “wind ropes” and cross more than a hundred meters in an instant. 504
Devil Fruit Awakening
Dragon’s awakening fuses his Hurricane-Hurricane Fruit power with the battlefield environment. 505
- Hurricane Space — Generates a vast zone saturated with hurricane-force airflow, countering the area-wide lightning released by Ron’s Drums of Heaven. 505
- Silent Vacuum — Removes the air around a target, silencing the area and damaging the victim internally through pressure loss. 505
- Silent Vacuum is primarily a control technique; without follow-up attacks, its direct effect is limited against powerful opponents. 507
Mobility and Evasion
Dragon combines wind manipulation with Marine Rokushiki to become exceptionally difficult to hit. 368 508
- Agile Body — A wind-assisted state comparable to Kami-e that increases his speed and evasiveness. 368
- Light Body Willow Fluff — Combines wind with Kami-e, allowing him to evade dense attacks in mid-air with feather-like movement. 508
- He can use rotating air currents to create rapid escape routes spanning roughly a thousand meters. 506
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Dragon remained a dangerous close-range fighter even before relying on his Devil Fruit. His martial ability was sufficient for him to teach powerful techniques to Sabo. 505
- Uses the Revolutionary Army’s Dragon Claw Fist style. 505
- Possesses enough physical strength to overpower Ron in a normal-state weapon struggle. 504
- His combat skill and Devil Fruit use make him dangerous even to opponents who assume he is dependent on wind alone. 505
Equipment
- Observation Haki jamming device — A device from the Fleet Admiral’s Office used to block Ron’s Observation Haki and conceal Dragon’s arrival on Whitebeard Island. 368
Relationships
- Monkey D. Garp — His father; Garp’s status helped Dragon gain early recognition in the Marines. 74
- Ron — A recurring enemy and rival whose plans Dragon repeatedly obstructed; they later became allies when Dragon accepted Ron’s campaign against the gods and the Celestial Dragons. 368 941
- Sabo — Dragon’s trusted successor as Revolutionary Army leader. Dragon explicitly relinquished leadership to him after escaping Impel Down. 815 941
- Nico Robin — Recruited her into the Revolutionary Army for her ability to decipher Archaic Script, then personally defended her escape during the Baldigo operation. 499 504
- Akainu — Former Marine associate, old rival, and present ideological enemy; their shared past remains emotionally significant to both. 507 645
- Momousagi — Former Marine acquaintance who was saved by Dragon in the past and later pursued him as a rival. 507
- Bartholomew Bear — Revolutionary Army comrade who could have helped Dragon escape capture, but respected Dragon’s refusal. 510
Story Role / Major Arcs
Whitebeard Island Conflict
Dragon appeared to shield Ace and Sabo from Teach’s Sacrifice Fruit explosion, then confronted Ron to prevent him from pursuing them. Their clash of wind and lightning devastated Whitebeard Island, and Dragon used a Haki-jamming device and superior airflow perception to counter Ron’s usual surveillance advantage. 367 368
The battle was interrupted by Whitebeard’s arrival. Dragon was later wounded in a single strike by CP0’s Zero, but his strength was still assessed by Ron as comparable to a Yonko-level combatant. 369 372 386
Baldigo Raid and Capture
When the Marine Airship Force attacked Baldigo, Dragon ordered the Revolutionary Army to withdraw rather than sacrifice troops in a direct engagement. He stayed behind to protect Robin and Koala, using his awakened power to create an escape opportunity for them. 503 504
Ron, Akainu, and Momousagi ultimately overwhelmed Dragon through coordinated attacks. After being restrained by Ron’s Dragon Locking Heaven Array, Dragon self-destructed to avoid Momousagi’s strike but was captured by Akainu. 508 509
Imprisonment and Escape
Dragon was held in Impel Down’s Level 6, where he resisted the influence of Thundercloud and refused Ron’s offer to trade Revolutionary Army intelligence for his life. 610 611
His imprisonment was part of a broader plan: by allowing himself to be taken, he concealed the Revolutionary Army’s true foundation while its forces dispersed beyond Marine surveillance. 514 571
Dragon later escaped Impel Down unharmed, defeated Magellan, freed numerous Level 6 prisoners, and helped ignite the Revolutionary Army’s open declaration of war against the World Government. 816
Alliance with Ron
After Sabo assumed leadership of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon returned as a cadre rather than its commander. At the Holy Land, he surrendered himself and the Revolutionary Army’s forces to atone for their past actions, recognizing Ron as an ally in the fight against Imu and the gods. 941
Notable Quotes

— Dragon to Sabo 815
“With the resolve to die, I have come to surrender!”
— Dragon to Akainu 941
