Background / History
Marine Admiral
Akainu was one of Marine Headquarters’ Three Admirals and the leading figure of the Hawk Faction. He believed the Marines should become a punitive force capable of sweeping through the New World, and regarded command of a massive Marine fleet as the ideal expression of the “golden age” he sought for the organization. 85 214
His ambition to become Fleet Admiral was tied to military achievement. Frustrated by being repeatedly kept at Headquarters while major events unfolded elsewhere, he sought dangerous assignments against the Revolutionary Army and the Yonko to prove himself. 501
During the Beasts Pirates’ attack on G-5, Akainu treated the strike as a declaration of war and volunteered to lead the counteroffensive. He later entered the battle personally, taking King so Ron could focus on Jack. 264 271
Wars against the Yonko
Akainu repeatedly confronted Kaido. During one major clash, he used his awakened powers to create a volcanic battlefield, overwhelm Kaido with magma, and force the Yonko to contend with an environment increasingly hostile to him. 562 563 564
He also fought Whitebeard during Ron’s engineered Summit War. After Chaton’s assassination attempt created an opening, Akainu attacked Whitebeard directly, but was nearly overwhelmed before Ron arrived to block Whitebeard’s strike and allow him to escape. 545 546
When Shanks, Whitebeard, and Kaido gathered on the battlefield, Akainu attempted to frame their presence as a Yonko alliance, seeking to force a unified Marine response. Kaido rejected the claim, refusing cooperation on the grounds of his own pride. 556 557
Fleet Admiral Succession
Following Sengoku’s resignation, Akainu and Aokiji contested the Fleet Admiral position through a duel on Thunder God Island. Their opposing philosophies—not personal enmity—made compromise impossible. 678 679
Akainu ultimately defeated Aokiji after a brutal battle. Although severely injured, he acknowledged Aokiji’s performance before declaring victory and assuming the burden of Fleet Admiral. 685 686
Fleet Admiral
As Fleet Admiral, Akainu entrusted Ron with sensitive matters, including the investigation into the disappearance of the Celestial Dragons and the search for Oric. 688
He continued to prioritize Marine readiness against Kaido, Oric, the Sea Kings, and threats to Mary Geoise. Despite his rivalry with Aokiji, he reacted with concern when Aokiji was critically injured and immediately arranged reinforcements. 834 843
During the campaign against the Talking Snake and its Sea Kings, Akainu used Lava Hell to reshape and devastate the battlefield, then cooperated with Kizaru and former CP0 agents against the larger threat. 905 906
Appearance
Akainu is a large, dark-complexioned man, described as roughly three meters tall. As Fleet Admiral, he wears a crimson plum-blossom suit, a Justice cape, and a baseball cap. 501 545 688
- Broad, imposing build.
- Often surrounded by magma and sulfurous heat while fighting. 506 906
- Wears the epaulets of the Fleet Admiral after succeeding Sengoku. 688
- His crimson suit and cap remain part of his standard command attire. 688
Personality
Akainu is defined by Absolute Justice: he considers pirates inherently evil, believes the Marines must prevail, and accepts sacrifices as the cost of enforcing that outcome. His standards extend to fellow Marines; he is willing to turn on subordinates he considers a stain on justice. 501
Though famously aggressive, he is not merely reckless. Akainu plans around intelligence, terrain, logistics, and political consequences, such as using awakened magma to alter Kaido’s battlefield and accepting Tsuru’s warnings when the Marines cannot afford an immediate war. 562 564 842
He is fiercely protective of Marine authority and reputation. In one operation, he explicitly prioritized the Marines’ honor over civilian lives when deciding on necessary concessions to trap pirates. 719
Becoming Fleet Admiral forces him to compromise more often than he prefers. He follows the Five Elders’ chain of command, relies on Tsuru’s counsel, and shows practical concern for key officers such as Aokiji and Ron. 707 842 843
Abilities & Skills
Lava-Lava Fruit
Akainu is an awakened Logia-type Lava-Lava Fruit user. His magma possesses extreme destructive power and can permanently alter the surrounding environment. 522 562
- Generates and controls magma on a massive scale. 562 906
- Can turn islands into volcanic battlefields and seas of fire. 562 564
- Uses elemental dispersal to avoid direct attacks when necessary. 545
- His magma is described as capable of exceeding 2,000 degrees under his control. 563
Devil Fruit Awakening: Lava Hell
Lava Hell is Akainu’s awakened technique, allowing him to unleash magma across a wide area and reshape the battlefield into a lethal volcanic domain. 563 906
- Engulfed Kaido in a sea of magma alongside Hell Hunt. 563
- Created a large-scale eruption that destroyed part of an island during the Sea King operation. 906
- Requires preparation time for its largest battlefield-altering applications. 906
Hell Hound
Hell Hound is Akainu’s concentrated magma strike, derived from Zephyr’s principles behind Martial Arm: Nether Gate. 522 563
- A single Hell Hound can pierce through powerful opponents, including Dragon. 506 522
- At higher output, Akainu can produce hundreds or thousands of magma hounds simultaneously. 563
- Variations include Dog Biting Crimson Lotus, which forms a magma hound around his arm to intercept attacks. 549
Other Techniques
- Meteor Volcano — A bombardment technique used against Whitebeard. 549
- Great Eruption — Launches repeated magma pillars to suppress and blast back opponents. 564
- Hell Hunt — An awakened follow-up used with Lava Hell against Kaido. 563
- Geppo — Uses aerial movement in combat. 906
Relationships
- Ron / Admiral Azure Dragon — Powerful subordinate and trusted operative. Akainu relies on Ron for confidential investigations and battlefield interventions, though Ron’s ruthlessness also puts pressure on him. 688 827
- Aokiji / Kuzan — Longtime rival and opponent in the Fleet Admiral succession duel. Despite their hostility, Akainu respects Aokiji’s strength and acts quickly when he is endangered. 686 834 843
- Kizaru / Borsalino — Fellow Admiral whom Akainu frequently reprimands for laziness and unreliability. They nevertheless coordinate effectively in major battles. 797 906
- Sengoku — Predecessor as Fleet Admiral. Sengoku often restrained Akainu’s aggression but remained at Headquarters as Grand Inspector to help stabilize the Marines after Akainu’s promotion. 264 686
- Tsuru — Chief Staff and crucial strategic adviser. She regularly challenges Akainu’s impulsive proposals and helps moderate his decisions. 776 834 842
- Monkey D. Dragon — A decades-long rival and former friend whose opposition became ideological after Dragon founded the Revolutionary Army. 509 645
- Kaido — Recurring Yonko adversary. Akainu fought him directly, used awakened magma against him, and later treated him as the Marines’ foremost New World threat. 561 563 834
