Rise during the Third Shinobi World War

Minato rose from a civilian Jonin to a leading Hokage candidate through his war record. Tsunade considered him the central figure of the Third Shinobi World War, while Danzō regarded him as one of Orochimaru's principal rivals for the Hokage position. His victories included repelling Kumogakure's AB Combo and severing Iwagakure's supply route at Shen Wubi Bridge. 3 8

When Madara Uchiha reappeared, Minato arrived at the battlefield after Jiraiya had been gravely wounded. Believing Liao Wu to be responsible, he attacked with a Rasengan and inflicted severe internal damage, though Liao Wu regenerated. Faced with Madara's overwhelming power, Minato used the Flying Thunder God Technique to evacuate himself and Jiraiya. 33

The Third Hokage subsequently entrusted him with investigating Madara and securing the Rinnegan before it could fall into Madara's hands. Minato was instructed to assemble a Jonin squad and travel to the Land of Rain. 54

Land of Rain mission

Minato recruited Kurenai after testing her genjutsu and led Kakashi, Rin, Obito, and Kurenai toward Amegakure. When Ryobu used Kurenai as a shield and hostage, Minato immediately withdrew his Rasengan rather than risk her life; Ryobu then escaped underground with her. 59 77

After tracking Akatsuki, Minato introduced himself to Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan as Jiraiya's disciple and therefore their senior brother. He warned them that Madara had revived and that Nagato's Rinnegan was likely Madara's. Ryobu's interference left Akatsuki deeply suspicious of Konoha's intentions. 82 83

During the escalating conflict, Liao Wu forced Minato to choose between rescuing a captured Root ninja and preventing the Rinnegan from falling to Madara. Minato chose the mission objective, but openly felt guilt over abandoning a comrade. 95

Loss and restoration of his arm

Minato later returned from an operation against Madara and Ryobu with his right arm severed. Although he intended to return for Jiraiya despite the injury, Fukasaku had already reverse-summoned Jiraiya to Mount Myōboku. Minato concluded that Ryobu's Wood Style and regeneration had made him an opponent Konoha could not presently defeat. 169

Kushina restored Minato's arm by sealing a White Zetsu Clone into the severed limb with the Eight Trigrams Seal. Mikoto's Sharingan helped him gain control of the clone, while Kushina supplied chakra to activate its Yang Release-based regeneration. 180

Ninja Alliance battles

Minato became one of the Ninja Alliance's foremost defenders against Ryobu and Madara. He confronted Ryobu's clone with composure, identified it as a likely clone, and forced it to retreat rather than fight him directly. 400
