Lucas almost thought he had misheard.

The enemy ship outside was already firing on their stern, and Grande was telling him he couldn't get there yet?

"What could possibly be more urgent than an enemy attack?!"

"Grande! I don't care what you're doing right now. Even if you have to crawl, get yourself to the Captain's Cabin!"

On the second floor of the deckhouse.

Grande stood beside a tightly shut door, clutching a Voice Conch. His expression had gone well beyond grim.

He would have crawled if he could. The problem was, he couldn't even get out of this corridor.

The corridor that had once led straight to the stairs had somehow become endless.

The stairs to the third-floor Captain's Cabin were right ahead. Grande had charged toward them three times, but every time he opened the door at the end, he found himself back where he had started.

The senior officers' rooms on either side were in even worse shape.

One officer had locked himself inside and refused to come out no matter how Grande knocked. Another huddled in a corner, clutching his head and muttering, "Don't find me," over and over. Two officers who usually got along were hacking at each other with knives, and they attacked anyone who came near.

Grande looked up. At the end of the corridor, a pale little head slowly poked upside down through the ceiling.

Its empty eye sockets stared straight at him.

"Hee hee hee..."

"Found you."

Grande gripped the Voice Conch, at a loss for how to explain any of this to the Captain.
