Son Goku trains obsessively after being warned that he could be left behind by his brother. His drive to grow stronger is treated as central to his character 837. While living on Master Roshi's island, he fights sea monsters, develops underwater combat methods, and struggles to match Goten's endurance and control over his Saiyan tail 848.

He becomes a Great Ape during his clash with Goten. Goten's charged Kamehameha leaves him alive but breaks his tail, removing his ability to transform again for the immediate future 855 856. Under Master Roshi's guidance, Goku quickly learns Kamehameha and continues developing his control over Ki 860 861.

Goku defeats Tien Shinhan and offers him a place on his team, then fights through the World Martial Arts Tournament against opponents including Yamcha and the Man in Black 943 972.
