Background / History
Laozi first appears alongside Yuanshi Tianzun and Tongtian during the dispute over the Creation Green Lotus. The three identify themselves as the Sanqing and Pangu Orthodox, treating Houtu and Nuwa as beneath their concern. Laozi remains silent while his brothers speak, dismissively shaking his head at Houtu. 13
As eldest brother of the Sanqing, Laozi holds that their Pangu lineage entitles them to stand above the Ten Thousand Races. After Qing Xuan punishes Yuanshi, Laozi attempts to intercept the Hongmeng Liangtian Ruler with his Coiling Dragon Flat Crutch, but the ruler passes through the weapon and strikes him. He subsequently regards the humiliation as a consequence of insufficient strength rather than a flaw in the Sanqing's conduct. 15 16
At Zixiao Palace, Laozi breaks through during Hong Jun's second sermon by severing his Good Corpse. During the third sermon, he receives Primordial Violet Qi, the Taiji Diagram, and recognition as Hong Jun's disciple; Hong Jun assigns him the future task of establishing a great teaching to educate the Primordial World. 31 37
Laozi initially mistakes the Human Race for his opportunity to prove the Dao and attempts to establish the Human Teaching without Nuwa's consent. Nuwa interrupts him before his declaration is completed and pins him to his Golden Bridge with Saint Pressure. After seeking Hong Jun's guidance, Laozi acknowledges that he acted impatiently and shares the path revealed to him with his brothers. He and Yuanshi subsequently establish Chanjiao, while Tongtian establishes Jiejiao; the Sanqing attain Sainthood. 65 66
Following his ascension, Laozi increasingly acts as a restrained mediator among the Sanqing. He avoids escalating some disputes, attempts to restrain Yuanshi's excesses, and intervenes to repair Guangchengzi and Chijingzi after their punishment by Qing Xuan. 71 129 130
At Shouyang Mountain, Laozi bargains with Qing Xuan for information about the future and a possible escape from Heavenly Dao control. He offers the Six Ding Divine Fire Origin after securing Qing Xuan's agreement that Laozi may aid the future Human Dao and potentially share in its recognition through his own contributions. 111 112 113
Appearance
Laozi is depicted as an elderly Daoist with white or crane-like hair, a white beard, and a childlike complexion. He commonly carries a fly whisk and travels on a Horned Green Ox. 111 129
- Calm, ancient-looking bearing and an outwardly impassive expression. 111
- Usually wears Daoist robes and carries a fly whisk. 111
- Rides a Horned Green Ox when traveling. 129 151
- His Saint Dharma Aspect is surrounded by faint Xuanhuang Qi and bears his Coiling Dragon Flat Crutch. 148
Personality
Laozi presents himself as detached, composed, and reluctant to act without clear benefit. During the Zixiao Palace conflict involving the Two Sages of the West, he declines to involve himself and avoids drawing attention to the Sanqing. 22
Behind this calm exterior, he is calculating and patient. He recognizes Qing Xuan's unusual relationship with the Human Race, deduces the possible awakening of the Human Dao, and seeks to secure a place for himself before that change occurs. Qing Xuan explicitly judges him to be someone who appears to do nothing while quietly planning everything. 112 113
Laozi is also more restrained than Yuanshi Tianzun. He apologizes to Qing Xuan for Yuanshi's poor discipline, attempts to resolve the Human Temple incident without direct confrontation, and refines the replacement bodies of Guangchengzi and Chijingzi rather than allowing Yuanshi to proceed rashly. 129 130 131
Abilities & Skills

Alchemy and Divine Fire
Laozi is an accomplished alchemist based at the Eight Views Palace. The Six Ding Divine Fire is essential to his refinement work, and replenishing even a wisp of its origin requires ten thousand years. 111

- Possesses Nine Revolutions Golden Elixirs. 63 130
- Used the Six Ding Divine Fire and Nine Revolutions Golden Elixirs to reforge the bodies of Guangchengzi and Chijingzi over forty-nine years. 130

Sacred Treasure Mastery
Laozi wields major Innate treasures bestowed by Hong Jun and uses them in both battle and sect-fortune suppression. 37

Sectarian Strategy
As Chanjiao's Grand Leader, Laozi favors containment, negotiation, and long-term positioning over Yuanshi's direct aggression. 71 112
- Proposed that Chanjiao and Jiejiao could avoid their future doctrinal conflict by merging into Daoism under his leadership. 112
- Suggested that Guangchengzi and Chijingzi seek forgiveness from the Human Race, since their Nascent Souls could not otherwise be released from the Human Temple. 131
- Proposed allowing each teaching to submit names for the Investiture of the Gods rather than leaving all selections to the calamity. 177
