Background / History

Yuanshi Tianzun is one of the Sanqing, formed from Pangu's Three Souls alongside Laozi and Tongtian. He considers the Sanqing the legitimate Pangu Orthodox, yet Qing Xuan repeatedly challenges his understanding of Pangu's legacy and Dao path. 69 89

Before the Zixiao Palace lectures, he openly disdained the Twelve Ancestral Witches as brutes who cultivated only their bodies and neglected their Primordial Spirits. He attacked Houtu after learning her identity; their battle initially ended in a stalemate, but he gained an advantage by using his Fly Whisk from range against her cumbersome Ancestral Witch True Body. He withdrew when the Heavenly Punishment surrounding the mature Creation Green Lotus appeared. 14

When the Twenty-Four Grade Creation Green Lotus transformed into the Qing Lian Three Treasures, Yuanshi received the Three Treasures Ruyi. Later, Hong Jun accepted him as his second disciple and granted him the Pangu Banner to suppress the fortune of his future teaching. 15 37

Personality

Yuanshi is proud, hierarchical, and intensely concerned with legitimacy. He regards the Sanqing as Pangu's orthodox descendants and dismisses those he considers poorly rooted or born from inferior origins, including members of Tongtian's Jiejiao. 14 119 177

He is stubborn when his choices are challenged. After Qing Xuan and Nuwa reveal that establishing teachings through merit hindered the Sanqing's path toward the Dao Realm, Yuanshi refuses to accept that he had chosen the wrong path and instead rationalizes Nuwa's greater pressure as a matter of seniority in attaining Sainthood. 69

His temper and desire to preserve Chanjiao's standing frequently override restraint. He attacks Qing Xuan over the punishment of Guangchengzi and Chijingzi, then kills the two disciples' bodies to preserve the sect's reputation while secretly retaining their Nascent Souls for resurrection. 129 130
