Background / History
Wood Release Research
Before Qingguang’s first operation, Orochimaru discovered that Yin Release chakra could partially suppress Wood Release’s uncontrolled growth. Testing Qingguang’s blood further supported that finding. Despite Hiruzen banning the project six months earlier, Orochimaru and Danzo resumed experimentation with Qingguang as their subject 1 3.
Hiruzen interrupted the operation and ordered Orochimaru to keep Qingguang alive. Orochimaru’s apparent helplessness concealed excitement: the experimental readings were stabilizing instead of collapsing. Qingguang became the project’s only successful case, making him particularly valuable to Orochimaru’s research 1 13.
Orochimaru subsequently pushed for faster treatment and larger doses. He increased one dosage without notifying Hiruzen beforehand and investigated whether Wood Release cells could advance the Sharingan beyond three tomoe 13 40 50.
Manipulating Qingguang’s Loyalties
Orochimaru used the disappearance of three Uchiha shinobi to undermine Qingguang’s trust in Danzo. He later disclosed that he possessed two pairs of Sharingan, suggesting that the killings were an internal affair rather than the work of outside spies 14 15 39.
His manipulation extended to Hiruzen. During the Hyuga supply-selling investigation, he deliberately used the Hokage’s restrained response to create friction between Qingguang and their teacher while positioning himself as Qingguang’s sympathetic ally 66.
Although outwardly cooperating with Danzo, Orochimaru also disclosed his involvement to Hiruzen. Hiruzen observed a later operation in secret and told Orochimaru that he trusted him more than Danzo where Qingguang was concerned 149 150.
War and Nawaki’s Rescue
During the war against Amegakure and Sunagakure, Orochimaru assigned Kimoku Kōtō’s squad a near-certain-death infiltration mission. Nawaki overheard the orders and secretly followed them; his participation was not part of the original assignment. Orochimaru reacted with anger and alarm upon discovering his disciple’s disappearance 88.
After Nawaki was captured, Orochimaru deployed forces to rescue him and attack the enemy granary. During negotiations, however, he claimed that sending someone of Nawaki’s prominence into enemy territory had been intentional. This presentation of events reinforced Tsunade’s suspicion that he would sacrifice anyone for victory 93 94.
Orochimaru also requested a large-scale battlefield demonstration of Qingguang’s Wood Release to strengthen Konoha’s morale. Following the deaths of six Uchiha jonin, he offered to seek the highest village compensation and personally contribute an additional ten million ryo 97.
Fourth Hokage Candidacy
Qingguang’s emergence as Konoha’s hero threatened Orochimaru’s chances of becoming Fourth Hokage. Orochimaru responded by rejecting Kagerō Village’s peace request, destroying the village with Manda, and proposing the annexation of the Land of Mountains. Territorial expansion offered a way to gain the Daimyo’s favor 155.
His candidacy attracted support from the Hyuga clan, village officials, and Root’s acting leader, Ryūma Aburame. Abroad, his reputation worked against him: Hanzō and the Land of Rain’s Daimyo distrusted his wartime methods and favored cooperation with Qingguang instead 158 159.
Public revelations about Root then implicated Orochimaru and damaged the villagers’ trust in him. He ordered his followers to circulate information distancing him from the organization 160 161.
Immediately before the final selection, Qingguang’s ideas about research, shinobi independence, and reform captured Orochimaru’s interest. He acknowledged that Qingguang might be better suited to the position and performed a final Wood Release operation using his privately saved cells in a secret laboratory containing living human subjects 162.
Mountain Forest City and Sage Training
After losing the election, Orochimaru voluntarily relocated to Mountain Forest City. Outsiders interpreted the move as banishment, but he had become an active supporter of Qingguang. He governed through rewards and coercion, removed the former local Daimyo and nobles, and received permission to establish a Ninja Academy branch campus 172 173.
A successful operation addressing the Iburi clan’s atomization problem gave Orochimaru a new approach to surviving Ryūchi Cave’s dangerous Sage Mode training. He asked Qingguang to accompany him as protection against failure 180.
At Ryūchi Cave, the White Snake Sage forced him to begin training before Qingguang completed the entrance trials. Her added poison nearly killed him. Qingguang’s Amaterasu and Takama-ga-hara restored his chakra, healed his body, and removed the poison, allowing him to master perfect Sage Mode 183 184.
Orochimaru later declined the Fifth Hokage position, preferring research to administration. When Qingguang relocated the flying-ninja-tool base to Konoha, Orochimaru remained behind to erase its traces. He continued specialist research, including responsibility for Kabuto’s proposed corpse-control technique 197 206.
Appearance
- Hair: Black, shown matted with blood during the destruction of Kagerō Village 155.
- Eyes: Brownish-yellow, snake-like eyes before Sage training; bright, pure yellow afterward 39 184.
- Facial markings: Purple eye markings extend downward along the bridge of his nose during his Sage transformation. His eyeliner remains longer after training 184.
- Tongue: Long and snake-like, frequently flicked across his lips 2 155.
- Sage transformation: Develops two horns, patches of scales, and thickened pale skin. The horns and scales disappear after adaptation, while his complexion becomes fairer 184.
Personality
Orochimaru’s central interest is discovering how ninjutsu works and what lies beyond its apparent limits. Restrictions on Qingguang’s treatment frustrate him because they slow experimentation; the Hokage position initially appeals to him as a means of escaping oversight and accessing forbidden techniques 13 158.
He treats information, patronage, and personal relationships as tools. He cultivates followers by funding their development and teaching them ninjutsu, exploits clan secrets during negotiations, and encourages distrust between Qingguang and other authority figures 14 66 88.
His ruthlessness is especially pronounced in war. He considers sacrificing a small squad worthwhile if it restores Konoha’s initiative, and he dismisses Tsunade’s objections after killing an enemy who had already surrendered 88 155.
His attachment to research can nevertheless outweigh political ambition. Qingguang’s reform proposals interest him enough to reconsider their rivalry, and he later rejects another opportunity to become Hokage. Even while Nagato unleashes catastrophic natural disasters, Orochimaru remains fascinated by the ability to command heaven and earth 162 197 214.

- Masters a perfect form after surviving natural-energy erosion and adapting his chakra balance 184.
- Qingguang’s healing and enhancement are decisive in overcoming the poisoned initiation 184.
- His snake-inspired “Great Snake Flow” ninjutsu and taijutsu provide a compatible combat foundation for Ryūchi Cave’s senjutsu 181.
Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation
- Animates and reshapes the terrain around the former flying-tool base, completely removing its traces 197.
- Uses a small amount of Hashirama-derived biological material during this application 197.
Orochimaru’s Substitution Technique
- Sheds human skin to survive the damage inflicted during Sage Mode initiation 184.
- At that stage, the unfinished technique can be used at most three times; he has already used it twice when Qingguang reaches him 184.
- Qingguang identifies it as a new technique developed with inspiration from Hiruko 184.
Summoning and Clone Techniques
- Manda: Summons the enormous purple-scaled serpent inside Kagerō Village, crushing its defenses and enabling the village’s destruction. Manda demands living sacrifices as payment 155 184.
- Messenger snakes: Uses a small white snake to deliver the scroll directing Qingguang to a hidden underground laboratory 148.
- Shadow Clones: Leaves a clone with Hiruzen while his original body secretly meets Qingguang 39 40.
Strategy and Political Negotiation
- Secures an additional 5 jonin, 15 chunin, and 45 genin from the Hyuga clan by combining village demands with evidence against three main-family elders 66.
