Background & History

The Uchiha were historically one of Konoha's strongest clans, but their relationship with the village leadership deteriorated after Uchiha Madara's defection, the loss of the Second Hokage's succession, and prolonged political suppression. The resulting resentment divided the clan and made it a potential internal danger to Konoha during a period of external threats. 3

Hiruzen Sarutobi viewed Kagami Uchiha—and later Kagami's son Qingguang—as bridges between the village and the clan. Qingguang returned to Kagami's former residence and began attending clan meetings with the stated goal of restoring the Uchiha's trust in Konoha. 3

The clan initially remained factionalized and distrustful of the Hokage's intelligence mission to Amegakure. Qingguang's acceptance of the mission, however, earned him wider recognition among the Uchiha and gave the clan a chance to demonstrate its value to the village. 18 19

Clan Politics

The Uchiha were divided into three major political tendencies:

• Hawk Faction — Led by Elder Setsuna; hostile toward Konoha's leadership and inclined toward forceful action. 18
• Dove Faction — Represented by Elder Hanaumi; wary of actions that could worsen relations with other clans. 18
• Neutral Faction — Associated with the clan leadership and initially hesitant about Qingguang's succession. 80

The clan's ancestral land centers on Naka Shrine, located on Konohagakure's southern outskirts. Its underground secret room is used for major clan meetings and emergency deliberations. 18 79

Police Department

The Uchiha Police Department was the clan's institutional foundation in Konoha and was once regarded as authority that could not be shared with outsiders. 24

Under Qingguang's reforms, the department changed its public image through smiling patrols and more approachable interactions with civilians. Within one month, its members' conduct had visibly improved enough to reach Hiruzen Sarutobi. 11 12

The department later opened assessment opportunities to relatives of its members, marriage partners, and talented civilians. The policy preserved Uchiha involvement while allowing other groups to gain a stake in village law enforcement. 27 59

Clan Reforms

• Qingguang taught Police Department members to smile sincerely and interact warmly with villagers during patrols. 11
• The department's reforms helped reduce civilians' fear of the Uchiha and made the clan more acceptable to other ninja clans. 12 37

Abilities & Practices

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha's hereditary dōjutsu and a defining source of the clan's military standing. It cannot be acquired through ordinary training by those without Uchiha bloodline. 180

• Uchiha shinobi can observe and replicate an opponent's chakra flow, movements, and ninjutsu. 114
• The Sharingan enables powerful genjutsu, including direct control of captured opponents through eye contact. 198

Military Role

During the war, the Uchiha sent more than one tenth of their ninja to the front lines, making them Konoha's largest contributing clan by deployment. Fugaku led nearly one hundred Uchiha, including twelve Jonin, thirty-six Chunin, and thirty-six Genin. 79

Qingguang secured his succession as clan head by revealing his Wood Release and defeating multiple challengers, convincing the clan that he possessed the strength expected of an Uchiha leader. 80 82

As clan head, Qingguang organized forty-five Uchiha Jonin—including himself—into an elite blade squad for the war. 82

The clan later supported Hatake Sakumo on the northern front, used aerial and fire-based tactics against enemy formations, and protected Qingguang while he drained the Four-Tails' chakra. 113 114 116
