Li Mingyue stood just outside the prison door, her figure sliced apart by the door frame. Backlit by the firelight, her expression was impossible to make out.
Fang Mo climbed up from the ground, patted the dust off himself, and wore a harmless, innocent smile.
Even though he was at a disadvantage, the Cold-Blooded talent he had just acquired made his heart like a block of ten-thousand-year ice, without the slightest ripple.
Li Mingyue's delicate brows lifted slightly. This kid was rather interesting.
Ordinary people who entered the Demon Suppression Division's dungeon would count themselves brave if they did not piss their pants in terror, yet he could still smile?
With a wave of her hand, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was Monkey.
Monkey bowed and scraped, then ran forward like a lackey to open the prison door, making a welcoming gesture toward Li Mingyue.
Li Mingyue's gaze swept over the damp floor and moldy straw in the cell, and her brow twitched almost imperceptibly.
Monkey was a sharp one. He immediately understood and hurriedly bowed. "My lady, this place is filthy. Please wait in the interrogation hall; I will escort the prisoner over at once."
Li Mingyue nodded without a word, then turned and left. With her hands behind her back, even her steps seemed a little lighter.
Monkey turned around, and the fawning smile on his face instantly vanished, replaced by a lewd, vicious grin.
He stepped into the cell one pace at a time, cracking his knuckles with a series of pops.
"Kid, did you hear that? Once we get there, you'd better cooperate. Otherwise, I haven't seen blood in a long time!"
Monkey grinned, revealing a mouthful of large yellow teeth.
From that smile, Fang Mo felt a chill shoot from his tailbone straight to the crown of his head.
He wailed inwardly, When you're under someone else's eaves, you have no choice but to bow your head!
Thirty years east of the river, three hundred years west of the river, three thousand years in Henan—just you wait, young master!
Once I master my divine arts, today's grudge between us must be settled!
But then again, as the old saying went, those who knew the times were the true heroes.
At that thought, Fang Mo's face immediately piled up with smiles, even brighter than before. "Lord Monkey, you're absolutely right! I'll cooperate, absolutely cooperate! If you tell me to go east, I'll never go west. If you tell me to chase dogs, I'll never catch chickens!"
Monkey was stunned by his words for a moment, then patted his face in satisfaction. "At least you know what's good for you, kid."
And so, Monkey escorted Fang Mo through the gloomy dungeon and into a spacious hall.
On either side of the hall stood eight enormous tallow candles as thick as thighs, illuminating the entire space as brightly as day.
Fang Mo's nose twitched. There was none of the dungeon's rusty, moldy stench here. Instead, a faint fragrance drifted through the air, like some kind of precious incense.
At the head of the hall, Li Mingyue sat upright in a Grand Tutor Chair, holding a blue-and-white porcelain teacup as she leisurely sipped her tea.
She did not even raise her eyelids, as if Fang Mo and Monkey were no more than two clumps of air.
Seeing this, Monkey understood at once. He pressed down on Fang Mo's shoulder, about to force him down, and barked, "Why aren't you kneeling when you see my lady?!"
Fang Mo's knees went weak, and he was just about to go with the flow and kneel. After all, a true man could bend and stretch.
"Forget it."
Li Mingyue suddenly spoke from above, her voice cold and aloof.
She set down her teacup and blew lightly on the floating tea leaves.
"You may end up as colleagues in the future. Don't make things too ugly."
Hearing this, Monkey gave an awkward laugh and released him, then shouted sternly at Fang Mo, "Why aren't you thanking my lady for her grace?"
Fang Mo sighed in relief inwardly and was just about to cup his hands in salute and offer a few polite words.
But Li Mingyue waved her hand again. "No need for thanks."
She lifted her chin and pointed toward the corner of the wall.
"You can skip the kneeling. Go squat over there."
The smile on Fang Mo's face froze.
I thank your whole family! You're such a nice person, aren't you!
His mouth twitched, but he still obediently walked to the corner, leaned against the cold wall, and slowly squatted down.
To his surprise, Monkey followed over with a face full of bad luck and squatted beside him.
Monkey looked at Fang Mo with a resentful expression, his eyes seeming to say: It's all your fault, kid!
Fang Mo suddenly felt much more balanced.
He squeezed out a smile of fellow sufferers toward Monkey.
Fine. For the sake of you squatting here with me, I, Fang, am not someone who forgets old ties.
When the time comes, I'll hit you two fewer times—two thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight strikes will do, nice and round.
The two exchanged a glance and somehow read a trace of mutual sympathy in each other's eyes.
Li Mingyue, seated above, paid no attention at all to the two men sharing hardship in the corner.
She picked up an ancient-looking dossier from beside her and casually opened it.
"Fang Mo."
Her pearly teeth parted, and her voice echoed through the hall.
"A native of Wannian County in the Divine Capital, registered under the lowly class. His father, Fang Dashan, was formerly a jailer in Cell Block C, Room 9 of the Heavenly Prison. Eight days ago, while on duty, he was killed by demons, his death miserable to behold."
Fang Mo squatted in the corner, his eyelids twitching wildly as he listened.
"Fang Mo, age six. After stealing a chicken from his neighbor Widow Wang's home, he was hung from a roof beam by his father and beaten with bamboo strips. He subsequently swore never to steal chickens again."
"Age seven. He angered his teacher in the private school until the man fainted and was ordered to withdraw."
"Age eight. By the Little Clear River in Wannian County, he peeped at the daughter of Li's Tofu Shop while she bathed. After being discovered, he bit back and claimed her figure was inferior to the old sow his family raised."
Fang "Old Sow" Mo: "..."
His face went pale. No, are you people at the Demon Suppression Division really this idle?
