Background / History

Origins and Hidden Purpose

The Heavenly Prison and the Demon Suppression Division are described as powers older than Great Gan’s thousand-year dynasty. Their responsibilities differ: the Division suppresses demons aboveground, while the prison holds the world’s sinners underground. The Fang family has served in the prison for fifty-seven generations 6.

Its origins are not consistently understood by its staff. Wang Youan says its age can no longer be traced. A blood-written account later discovered in a secret chamber credits Wu’an Hou, a founding general of Great Gan, with building the prison for a concealed imperial project 9 265.

According to that account, Great Gan’s Taizu sought eternal life and perpetual national prosperity through a formation powered by Ancient God Demon remains. The formation, called Longevity, is revealed to be a Gu-raising pond whose completed Divine Fetus would turn the Divine Capital into a purgatory. Wu’an Hou attempted to destroy it, but was betrayed and trapped in the chamber where he left his warning 265.

Lost Warden Traditions

Originally, each of the prison’s ten layers had a Prison Overseer who was also a Soldier Lord, recognized by that layer’s Prison Suppressing Divine Weapon. Demonic uprisings and broken seals destroyed much of this inheritance: weapons were shattered, stolen by escaped demonic lords, or reduced to dormant scrap metal when no suitable wielder remained 92.

The later Divine Weapon Hall fielded three hundred and sixty elites. Its masked Soldier Lord disappeared during the Divine Capital riot eighteen years before Old Yan’s account, and the Hall was disbanded 92.

Layout and Notable Areas

The cells use the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches for their designations. The ten principal blocks are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui; their deeper arrangement follows the Five Elements and Eight Trigrams 9 260.

Area Description
Main entrance and barbican Guarded by two weathered Bi’an stone beasts. Heavy Iron Birch Wood gates open into a broad barbican with firing holes in its walls 202.
Block A Suppresses the heads of gods and demons within the royal family’s underground formation 250.
Block B Associated with the underground casino and its gamblers, whom Fang Mo later deploys against the Black Dragon Guards 246 255.
Block C Initially described as housing imperial officials and jianghu martial artists below the Qi Gathering Realm. Wealthy prisoners can obtain luxurious accommodations 12.
Block C, Room Shen Fang Mo’s operational base. Its accumulated Grievance Fiend Qi helps fuel his meridian-opening attempt; it also serves as the “torso” of the hidden formation 206 250.
Demon Suppressing Platform The prison’s largest central training ground, used for assessments and official gatherings 217.
Geng Character Room The “Weapon Forging Tomb,” sealed behind a talisman-covered Dragon-Slaying Stone. Contains maddened swordsmiths and sentient weapons 259.
Ji Block Earth-aligned central block, using extreme gravity for suppression and containment. Its prisoners are petrified and drained to sustain the field 260.
Block Xin A source of the old parchment map Fang Mo uses to track his conquest of the ten blocks 274.
Block Gui A women’s prison with pink fluorite lighting and sinister celestial-maiden murals. Its Black Water Pool forms the hidden formation’s “uterus” 248 250.
West Underground Level A restricted area containing a blood-lit cavity where Helian Cheng sacrifices talisman-covered prisoners into a churning pool 221.

Appearance

  • Lightless exterior: Towering walls block most daylight; blood-stained moss at their base has a dark-red hue 202.
  • Underground corridors: Fist-sized Luminous Pearls set every ten paces illuminate bloodstains and moss with a cold glow 9.
  • Persistent odors: Mildew, rust, moldy straw, and unwashed bodies characterize the ordinary prison areas 88 202.
  • Specialized interiors: Block Gui replaces the rough cells and torture displays of other areas with decorative murals and pink lighting, while Ji Block opens into a vast cave of petrified inmates 248 260.

Defenses and Containment

Formations and Barriers

  • The complex contains intricate mechanisms and dense formations. Even Zhou Tong, a Divine Treasure Realm official, considers entering Fang Mo’s territory dangerous 227.
  • Its dome’s accumulated formation barrier repels Fang Mo’s dark-red energy beam, forcing the energy back into Block C, Room Shen 207.
  • The formations are not invulnerable: an imperial edict powered by National Fortune strains the protective array and drives Block C, Room Shen’s foundation down by three feet 254.
  • Block C, Room Shen is rumored to connect to the Nine Nether Underworld Veins 227.

Prisoner Restrictions

  • Experts from the Punishment Department seal powerful inmates’ viscera temples, severing their connection to their divine treasures 109.
  • These restrictions can fail. Prisoner Twenty-Six breaks his seal and reopens his divine treasure inside the prison 109.
  • Ji Block imposes gravity one hundred times stronger than outside at its entrance, increasing further within. Its field consumes prisoners’ true qi, life force, and souls; some assimilated inmates can awaken as stone puppets 260.

Fang Mo’s Reinforcement

  • After claiming Ji Block, Fang Mo reinforces it with Spleen Earth Law and carves Prison Suppression patterns into its golden-brick floor 278.
  • He can activate patterns extending beyond the main gate onto the street. During the Heaven Devouring Hou’s approach, he lights every pattern beneath his feet as the beast fires at the entrance 278.
  • His separately manifested Prison Suppression Domain withstands Xiao Tiance’s attack without cracking, despite the destruction of nearby watchtowers 269.

Administration

Traditional Hierarchy

Distinction from Fang Mo’s Inner Prison

  • The institutional Heavenly Prison is the physical underground complex where Fang Dashan and Fang Mo work, governed by wardens, jailers, and imperial oversight 8 9 217.
  • Fang Mo’s inner prison is a supernatural realm in his soul depth, variously called the Prison Suppressor or Prison Suppressing Realm. Its first depicted captive is Old Ancestor Black Mountain, confined among floating cages around a colossal black tower 2 32 206.
  • Fang Mo can project that inner prison’s chains, laws, and domain into the physical complex. Their interaction does not make the ordinary facility and his soul-bound prison interchangeable 206 269 278.
