Nature and Identity

Ionia exists both as a vast continent and as the conscious Soul of Ionia. The physical continent has no nations and has never established a unified country, instead relying on martial-arts sects, religious orders, and extraordinary individuals for protection. Its people emphasize the Unity of Heaven and Man, and its landscape is known for its pristine natural beauty 27.

The Soul of Ionia possesses its own mental space and can communicate with individuals connected to Ionia’s Harbinger system. Its physical appearance and exact origin are not described 303 306.

Geography and Society

• Prexian — A prosperous academic town filled with temples, churches, monasteries, and people from many regions. It is also home to the Kinkou Order 31.
• Sunon Temple — A western Ionian stronghold and the home of the Western Harbinger. The surrounding area still bears the scars of an earlier resistance war 42.
• Natural environment — Ionia is comparatively untouched by urban development, with flowers and trees growing freely along narrow, difficult roads 27.
• Postwar society — Communication between Ionian regions increased after the invasions, significantly changing the continent’s traditional way of life 572.

Background and History

Ionia’s lack of a central government left it vulnerable when Noxus invaded. The continent eventually resisted through the combined efforts of martial-arts sects, religious organizations, and powerful individuals. Noxus’s defeat was also aided by Swain’s lack of preparation, which prevented the invasion from becoming a complete catastrophe 27.

Noxus continued to occupy a western Ionian stronghold after the first invasion. When Swain launched another campaign, the Noxian landing site was chosen near Sunon Temple, an area without nearby civilian settlements 42.

The renewed war caused severe casualties on both sides. Swain eventually halted his advance and proposed negotiations, which the Ionian coalition agreed to hold at Kinkou Monastery 61.

Abilities and Influence

Mind-to-Mind Communication

Harbingers can communicate telepathically while within Ionia. The connection allows them to exchange thoughts without speaking aloud, regardless of distance within the region 303.

Soul of Ionia’s Mental Space

The Soul of Ionia possesses a separate mental space. Syndra and Miyue entered it together and were able to perceive the space and communicate while waiting for the Soul of Ionia to address them 306.

• Communicates through a vast, hollow voice rather than a visible body 306.

Protective Intervention

The Soul of Ionia saved Yasuo after he was gravely wounded during his battle with Syndra. Following the intervention, Yasuo inherited Syndra’s divine essence and became the Northern Harbinger 501.

Harbinger Connection

The Soul of Ionia is closely associated with the Harbingers, but its relationship with each one is not identical. Yasuo stated that the Soul never required him to agree to the same conditions described by another Harbinger; he instead inherited Syndra’s divine status 303.
