Background / History

Fugaku led the Uchiha Clan and its Police Force during the war. He ordered Shinji to the front lines despite Shinji's recent mission and objections, invoking the clan's past support for Shinji's training to make clear that the decision was not negotiable. He considered Shinji a clan genius, though Shinji privately believed Fugaku had selected him as expendable protection for Shisui. 1 6

After Shinji returned from the front with a Three-Tomoe Sharingan and battlefield achievements, Fugaku accepted the elders' decision to bring him into the clan's inner circle and give him focused training. He later proposed that Shinji train in the Police Force, while admitting that he would not apologize for sending him to war—though he expressed regret that he had not known Shinji would awaken the Sharingan there. 25 31

Fugaku grew increasingly invested in raising the Uchiha Clan's standing in Konoha and aspired to become Hokage. Soon afterward, Obito impaled Fugaku and arranged for Black Zetsu to possess him, using Fugaku's body and Mangekyō as a weapon against Shinji. 113 115

Fugaku briefly overcame Black Zetsu's control and trapped it long enough for Shinji to attack. He survived the battle, but lost his right forearm and lower right leg, suffered extensive internal and meridian damage, and nearly lost his remaining ocular power through Black Zetsu's repeated use of Amaterasu. 117 122

On returning to Konoha, Fugaku's physical decline and failed Hokage bid prompted the elders to seek a replacement.
