Background

Rin and Shinji were Academy classmates who remained in contact after graduation. Their longstanding friendship gives her a high degree of trust in him, though his sudden confession and assertiveness initially leave her flustered 3 4.

During the Kannabi Bridge mission, Pakura captures Rin after an explosion leaves her unable to resist. Shinji and Obito pursue her, while Kakashi later joins the rescue 17 18. After Obito is trapped beneath a boulder while saving Kakashi, Rin mourns him deeply and resolves to keep living while carrying his feelings with her 21 22.

Following the war, Rin works at Konoha Hospital and develops her medical skills further. She teaches Shinji practical medical ninjutsu, including the principles of organ transplantation, after he gives her Chiyo's medical notes 38 39 40.

Before departing on a mission, Shinji uses genjutsu on Rin and seals a Ninja Crow carrying a Sharingan within her as an emergency life-saving measure. After she wakes, he explains that he acted because he foresaw danger in her future; their relationship becomes official shortly afterward 46 47.

Rin is later abducted by Kirigakure shinobi and discovers that the Three-Tails has been forcibly sealed inside her as a trap against Konoha. Shinji saves her from that attack, but she is subsequently fatally pierced by a Wood Release spike. After returning to Konoha, Rin resumes her hospital work and decides to improve her combat ability so she will not feel like a burden in future battles 80 91. She continues to worry intensely about Shinji's safety, including when Minato tests him after his return to Konoha 143 144.

She is deeply protective of her teammates. Rin worries over Obito after his defeat, thanks Shinji for sparing him unnecessary injury, and sees Obito as a kind but reckless younger brother 8 9. His apparent death devastates her, but she ultimately chooses to move forward rather than remain consumed by grief 21 22.

Her strongest trait is her selflessness.
