Background / History

The Uchiha are a Konohagakure clan distinguished by naturally powerful chakra, powerful minds, and the Sharingan kekkei genkai. Their members are raised with a strong warrior ethos; clan members regard surrender or humiliation as unacceptable and value strength highly. The clan also cares for war orphans within its ranks, including Uchiha Kai. 1 72 74 158

Their Sharingan can be stimulated to enhance a user's spirit and chakra, though rapid ocular development without a correspondingly strong body may cause the condition Kai calls the Bloodline Disease. He theorizes that this imbalance contributed to Uchiha Itachi's later illness. 74

The clan has been politically constrained since Uchiha Madara's rebellion. Uchiha Fugaku attributes its declining position to suppression originating in the Second Hokage's era, while Danzō views the clan's Sharingan—and especially the Mangekyō Sharingan—as a danger requiring control. 70 79

By Chapter 68, the clan's dissatisfaction with its position in the village has become open: its members believe they are excluded from recognition and military achievement while being confined to Guard Division duties. The Third Hokage permits Fugaku to dispatch members to the front lines temporarily, but the assignment against Kirigakure is regarded by many as humiliation and exploitation. 68 69

At a clan meeting, Kai publicly condemns the Uchiha's complacency, misconduct, and reliance on former glory. His criticism leads members—including Sakumo—to admit the clan's mediocrity and lack of exceptional figures.
