Background and History

Konoha enters the story during the Third Shinobi World War. Orochimaru's victory over the Sand Ninja at the Battle of Mount Kikyo temporarily restores confidence among the village's civilians, while the conflict with the Stone Ninja continues elsewhere. 5

The Battle of Kannabi Bridge becomes a major Konoha success: Minato Namikaze's team destroys the Stone Ninja supply route, helping weaken their front-line forces. The operation costs Konoha Uchiha Obito, who dies saving Kakashi Hatake. 34

By the later stages of the war, Konoha is severely understaffed. Its prominent fighters have been distributed across multiple fronts, academy graduates are being sent to battle, and the village must rely on temporary squads and young ninja for critical assignments. 64 84 107

Government and Defense

• Hokage administration — Hiruzen Sarutobi assigns missions, grants promotions, directs wartime policy, and personally appoints temporary combat squads when ordinary staffing proves insufficient. 35 84 168

Society and Clans

Konoha is home to powerful ninja clans including the Uchiha, Hyuga, and Aburame. Hiruzen describes these three lineages as the strongest clans present since the village's founding. 31

The village's prosperity and clan support are unevenly distributed. Civilian ninja face major financial barriers in acquiring and maintaining weapons and ninja tools, while clan members such as Uchiha Kai benefit from inherited resources and established support networks. 93 94

The Uchiha Clan is politically marginalized during the war. Although it volunteers for the front lines, Konoha's leadership previously keeps much of the clan in the village under the justification that the Security Force cannot be freely mobilized. 64 68

Hiruzen later acknowledges the Uchiha's wartime contributions and asks Kai to help reduce the divide between the clan and the village. He reinforces this goodwill by personally promoting Kai to chunin and publicly protecting his standing. 167 168

Conflict with Kirigakure

Kirigakure begins probing Konoha's condition after years of relative restraint. Its ninja believe Konoha has been weakened by prolonged wars against the Sand and Stone Ninja, while Hiruzen identifies the attacks as a deliberate test of whether the village can still retaliate. 48 49 63

• Kirigakure Anbu ambush Aburame Keiichi's Konoha squad in Yugakure, a neutral territory where local peacekeepers intervene to stop the clash from escalating further. 49 60
