Background
Keiichi served in Konoha's Anbu, where he maintained an exceptional mission-completion and intelligence-gathering record. Hiruzen Sarutobi removed him from Anbu duty because Keiichi had become consumed by missions and treated obedience and completion as a ninja's only principles. Hiruzen assigned him to teach instead, hoping he would reconnect with his own thoughts and feelings rather than become a “killing machine.” 18
He became the instructor of Team Seven: Uchiha Kai, Hyuga Rei, and Morino Kei. Their first meeting was awkward; Keiichi had little idea how to engage students and resorted to a basic self-introduction exercise. He admitted that he disliked troublesome things and had no dream at the time. 17
His bell test initially reflected his Anbu-hardened worldview. He pitted the students against one another, threatened to send the unsuccessful candidate back to the Academy, and punished Morino Kei by binding and starving him. When the team chose to share food and defend their bond despite his orders, Keiichi challenged their conviction before ultimately passing all three. 26 29 30 31
Following the test, Keiichi began to take pride in Team Seven and recognized that teaching differed from ordinary missions. He later led the team through D-rank work, a C-rank bandit operation in the Land of Hot Water, and an incident involving Kirigakure Anbu at a hot-spring establishment. 31 34 36 46 61
Appearance
Keiichi is a short-haired man who commonly wears a loose, high-collared robe. The collar conceals much of his face, contributing to his gloomy and stern first impression. 17 35
- High collar that covers half his face. 17
- Usually keeps his hands in his pockets. 17
- Carries kunai and can fight effectively with one in each hand. 27
- Has notably sharp teeth, referred to as “Snow Fang.” 49
Personality
Keiichi initially presents himself as cold, stern, and emotionally detached. He places extreme value on vigilance, discipline, carrying out orders, and completing missions; he considers complacency dangerous even inside Konoha. 18 26
His harshness is rooted in an Anbu mindset rather than indifference. He tests his students aggressively, rebukes recklessness, and expects them to accept the consequences of failure. Yet their unity changes him: he comes to value their potential, smiles openly after passing them, and admits that being their teacher is “not bad.” 29 31
In combat, Keiichi is calm, mocking, and openly arrogant toward enemies. His composure breaks into fierce protectiveness when opponents threaten his students; after finding Team Seven injured by Mist Anbu, he accepts personal responsibility for failing to protect them and retaliates without restraint. 50 51 58
Abilities & Skills
Kikaichū Manipulation
As an Aburame clansman, Keiichi cultivates Kikaichū that feed on his chakra and obey his commands. The insects support reconnaissance, battlefield control, defense, deception, and direct offense. 19 27 51
- His insects can drain an opponent's stamina and chakra through physical contact. 27
- Kikaichū can interfere with genjutsu: when Uchiha Kai controlled an insect clone with Sharingan genjutsu, the insects remained capable of acting independently. 27
- He can receive information from insects, including reports on the location and condition of his students. 51
- His swarm was heavily damaged by a combined Fire and Wind Release attack, showing vulnerability to large-scale fire techniques. 50
Secret Technique: Insect Wall
Keiichi creates a dense, flowing barrier of Kikaichū around himself.
- Blocked Uchiha Kai's Great Fireball Technique while under simultaneous shuriken pressure. 27
- The defense consumes insects; scorched bodies fall away after absorbing attacks. 27 28
Secret Technique: Insect Clone
Keiichi can form a convincing clone from Kikaichū rather than chakra alone.
- Used an insect clone to bait Morino Kei into the Earth Style: Double Suicide Decapitation Technique. 27
- The clone's insect composition enabled it to drain Morino's stamina after contact. 27
- Keiichi kept his real body hidden even from Hyuga Rei's Byakugan search. 27
Secret Technique: Insect Prison
Keiichi's strongest documented insect technique engulfs targets in an overwhelming mass of Kikaichū.
- Concealed insects in the surroundings while they absorbed his chakra and grew. 51
- Trapped Kiriki Seiryuu and Yukino in a swarm described as a descending black sea. 51
Ninjutsu and Combat
Keiichi possesses high speed, strong taijutsu, rapid hand seals, and proficiency in multiple chakra natures. 26 27 50
- Water Release: Water Formation Wall — Created a water barrier quickly enough to block two incoming Water Release techniques. 50
- Wind Release: Airflow Dance — Dispelled mist and defeated the remaining Mist ninja. 59
- Aerial movement — Used Kikaichū to lift himself into the air during battle. 50
- Taijutsu and weapon skill — Evaded Uchiha Kai's sword strike, countered with kicks, and suppressed shadow clones while dual-wielding kunai. 27
- Speed and stealth — Evaded Hyuga Rei's opening strike, appeared behind her, and remained undetected during the bell test. 26 27
Equipment / Items
- Kunai. 27
- High-collared robe. 17
- Blood-replenishing pills, used to stabilize Morino Kei after he was badly wounded. 58
- Intelligence scroll documenting Team Seiryuu's crimes. 58
Relationships
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Hokage, mentor-like superior, and the person who reassigned Keiichi from Anbu to teaching. Hiruzen trusts him with exceptional students and urges him to abandon harmful Anbu habits. 18 31 32
- Uchiha Kai — Student. Kai's strength, mindset, and defense of his teammates earn Keiichi's respect; Keiichi later considers him qualified for greater responsibility. 30 31 84
- Hyuga Rei — Student. Keiichi harshly critiques her lack of vigilance during the bell test but ultimately recognizes her ability and resolve. 26 31
- Morino Kei — Student. Keiichi frequently teases and disciplines him, but recognizes his extraordinary physique and chakra. 29 31 36
- Chishima Hanako — Deceased old friend. Keiichi learns of her death while visiting the hot-spring village. 46
- Chishima Tsurume — Hanako's daughter and the proprietor who inherited her businesses. Keiichi protects her from Mist Anbu and entrusts Team Seven to her care during the crisis. 46 47 51
- Orochimaru — Senior Konoha ninja who praises Keiichi's prior infiltration work and calls him one of the village's strongest ninja. 37
- Shimura Danzō — Political adversary. Keiichi openly shows disdain toward Danzō during a tense meeting with Hiruzen. 32
- Kiriki Seiryuu — Mist Anbu adversary. Keiichi defeats him during the hot-spring incident and kills him in neutral territory. 50 60
