Background

Keiichi served in Konoha's Anbu, where he maintained an exceptional mission-completion and intelligence-gathering record. Hiruzen Sarutobi removed him from Anbu duty because Keiichi had become consumed by missions and treated obedience and completion as a ninja's only principles. Hiruzen assigned him to teach instead, hoping he would reconnect with his own thoughts and feelings rather than become a “killing machine.” 18

He became the instructor of Team Seven: Uchiha Kai, Hyuga Rei, and Morino Kei. Their first meeting was awkward; Keiichi had little idea how to engage students and resorted to a basic self-introduction exercise. He admitted that he disliked troublesome things and had no dream at the time. 17

His bell test initially reflected his Anbu-hardened worldview. He pitted the students against one another, threatened to send the unsuccessful candidate back to the Academy, and punished Morino Kei by binding and starving him. When the team chose to share food and defend their bond despite his orders, Keiichi challenged their conviction before ultimately passing all three. 26 29 30 31

Following the test, Keiichi began to take pride in Team Seven and recognized that teaching differed from ordinary missions. His harshness is rooted in an Anbu mindset rather than indifference. He tests his students aggressively, rebukes recklessness, and expects them to accept the consequences of failure. Yet their unity changes him: he comes to value their potential, smiles openly after passing them, and admits that being their teacher is “not bad.” 29 31

In combat, Keiichi is calm, mocking, and openly arrogant toward enemies. His composure breaks into fierce protectiveness when opponents threaten his students; after finding Team Seven injured by Mist Anbu, he accepts personal responsibility for failing to protect them and retaliates without restraint. 50 51 58
