Ayanokoji enrolled in Class D after escaping the White Room, an institution that subjected children to extreme competitive education in an attempt to produce geniuses. He was the fourth batch's first successful product and remained the benchmark against whom later White Room students were measured. 169 252

At school, he initially concealed his abilities behind an awkward, expressionless persona. He scored exactly fifty points in every entrance-exam subject, deliberately placed tenth in a swimming race, and avoided revealing his physical strength. 16 47

During the Uninhabited Island Exam, Chabashira Sae pressured both Ayanokoji and Kamio Tatsuya to act against Class C. Ayanokoji began gathering intelligence outside Class D's camp and later identified Class B's leader, Shiranami Chihiro, through the students' behavior. 83
