The weather was nice today, though it was getting hotter by the day. Summer must be approaching in this hemisphere.
With the pleasant night weather and stars twinkling across the quiet sky above the great shield, the area inside and around the mine base felt especially comfortable and inviting.
The night around the base was peaceful and quiet. Apart from the occasional roar of machinery speeding through the dark sky or the whoosh of a passing fighter, an ordinary person would never imagine that just a few months ago this place had been engulfed in war, filled with the howls of daemons and the stench of human corpses.
Fortunately, those days were long gone. At least for now, the full-scale war near the mine base—and even near Guixu City—had been over for quite some time.
Some soldiers had even grown accustomed to the peaceful lull.
So much so that some people thought the threat of annihilation had passed forever. They believed that neither the Warp Daemons, nor the ancient Necrons, nor the Imperium of Man from Terra posed any further threat to Canopy Star or their survival.
A glance at the planet-wide online forums would show that many people thought exactly that. After the base had repeatedly defeated the Warp Daemons, the Imperium of Man's landing forces, and the Necrontyr Necrons buried underground for who knew how many millennia, pride and complacency had inevitably begun to spread.
To quite a few people, it seemed Canopy Star was now entirely under the control of the base and the new planetary government. Soldiers and ordinary citizens alike could settle down again and enjoy their new lives.
