In the southwestern part of North America, Earth, lay a vast stretch of desert. It was also one of the largest and hottest desert regions on the continent.

Besides its vast expanses of barren, drifting sand, it also contained unusually fertile farmland, lush with life thanks to its proximity to the Pacific rainy season, as well as a few small settlements and some Indian reservations.

Because of its unique climate—the humid air and the double rainy seasons brought by the Pacific monsoons in summer and winter—this desert held more than just sandy stretches. It was also covered with towering cacti and other succulent plants, along with countless thickets of low trees and various thorny shrubs.

Today, though, plenty of ranchers in this desert, along with the Indians living on the reservations, had clearly seen Superman and another strange, bald-headed figure streaking across the sky, one after the other. They couldn't make out the second figure very well.

They raced across the sky at incredible speed, one fleeing ahead while the other gave chase, all the while firing off terrifying blue or black energy blasts... Then, after a running battle, they quickly vanished into the scorching desert sky, leaving no trace.

Bald-headed and dressed in tattered clothes, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana's body had long since been restored by magic.
