Geonosis, a planet adorned with beautiful, multicolored rings, was a harsh, rocky world on the outer edge of the Galactic Republic. Its surface was much like Tatooine's desert landscape, made up of lifeless plateaus, hills, and vast stretches of barren, scorching hardpan and sand. But this place was even more inhospitable than Tatooine!

Unlike on the sweltering world of Tatooine, where people could live freely on the surface, hardly anyone on Geonosis stayed aboveground for long. The atmosphere was breathable, but stellar radiation storms regularly swept across the planet, forcing living things to retreat underground to survive and seek shelter.

Besides the high temperatures and intense radiation, the dense dust haze in the upper atmosphere also affected the creatures living on the planet. It created a darkness like night; even on the clearest days, everything was a murky yellowish red. The sky and rocks were tinged with the same desolate color, like a blanket of smog, and these miserable conditions often lasted for weeks...

And yet,

Even under the influence of such harsh natural conditions, the creatures that evolved on Geonosis—both intelligent beings and ordinary beasts—had developed powerful adaptations that let them survive in this unforgiving ecosystem. They had multiplied and thrived there, gradually developing a powerful civilization and technology.

The most advanced life forms on the planet were the humanoid beings known as Geonosians: intelligent, insect-like creatures with hard chitinous exoskeletons, narrow faces, and insect-like limbs. They spoke a strange, clicking "insect" language and lived
